The film may have been an overall stinker with above average rate of goof-ups in a (regular) Bollywood film. But the one thing they seemed to have hit a home-run with is the inclusion of “Khwab Dekhe - Sexy Lady” song featuring Saif Ali Khan and Katrina Kaif.
Music composer Pritam could very well be our new-generation Anu Malik – You know “paraya maal apna” sorts, especially with the lifting of “Pehli Naazar” from a Korean film. I mean seriously what the fuck he was thinking! In today’s Internet age (and the power of YouTube) such con jobs cannot be kept hidden for too long.
Okay fine, the above title may not be entirely true but adding a little credit to it – Something Relevant, the Jam Band that performed at Kala Ghoda Arts festival yesterday afternoon, mainly consists of some fine Parsi Dikaras.
Needless to say, these guys (Parsis + Non Parsis) completely rocked da house. And such was their impact that even my mum (a non-videshi music listener) sat thru most of their play time without any complaints.
In all honesty, I am not very fond of Jazz/Rock genre but give me Pop or R&B anytime and I am game. However this experience, I will admit made me realize how rigid in my music taste I had been all along.
Maybe it’s just Mumbai’s thanda thanda cool cool weather (yes we have left the Delhiwallas peeche in this department too) or maybe Bollywood’s current “crazy love” trend – (whatever may be the reason) but another Hindi romantic ballad has found its way to the top in my iPod Hit-list.
Those of you who went nutty on the “Tum Se Hi” song from the runaway hit Jab We Met, I guarantee will be taken aback by a equally scintillating and lovey-mushy track - Pehli Nazar Mein – from the soon to be released film, Race.
Okay Okay I get it; this song has been played to death and there are many who still don’t get how a sentence sounding like “Ella ella eh eh eh” can manage to rule Music charts for several weeks. I too questioned my taste while humming R&B singer Rihanna’s Umbrella in my car, at home, in the loo, at work, on my phone…surely you get the gist.
But as they say, “One cannot ignore the facts” and the fact is this song is freaking awesome. At first it may go bouncer but then it’s almost additive. Lyric’s aren’t extraordinary instead they are simple, non-completed and yet very meaningful.
When the sun shines, we’ll shine together Told you I’ll be here forever Said I’ll always be a friend Took an oath I’ma stick it out till the end Now that it’s raining more than ever Know that we’ll still have each other You can stand under my umbrella You can stand under my umbrella
As for the video, anything said would be less – I think it completely rocks. Rihanna looks super hot and never thought an umbrella could be used so efficiently as a dancing prop. Don’t believe me then check it out for yourself.
All in all, Umbrella was one of the best dance tracks to be released in 2007 but thanks to a Bollywood-obsessed DJ, I almost felt my 31st night to be in-complete without shaking a leg to it (Hopefully your DJ wasn’t as disturbing).
[Ps – Wish you all the very best in 2008 and to my special ones, lots of love and happiness.]
Okay, I am not a big Enrique Iglesias fan. Actually I am not even a small fan. Besides a couple of singles, I find most of his creations to be very repetitive. Plus he is not even a good stage performer; when for concert in Mumbai some years ago on the persistence of my darling friend and not exaggerating here, it felt as if I had shoved 4000 grand down the drain. Now it’s a different thing that my darling friend was pissed ticked off too – just because Mr. Sissy Pants didn’t pick her from the crowd and planted a big wet one on some other depressed soul. Ah! Some women I tell you.
If I have to pick from the two – Enrique or Ricky Martin? My choice without any second thoughts would be Ricky baba. He may not have that many variations in his music but boy, the way he swings his perfectly toned butt, it’s all so worth it.
Anyway, getting back to the topic at hand; my darling friend introduced to another fantastic song (previous one being, Tum Se Hi) titled Ring My Bells by Mr. Iglesias. If you haven’t heard it, I suggest you download it now.
Bollywood films are often referred to as “Musicals” by the international audience. I mean really, to watch a Hindi film minus the regular jhatka-matka songs, is as good as watching a soulless body in motion.
Such is the importance of “filmy music” that many thrashy Bollywood stories survived the Box Office onslaught only because of their strong music hold among the masses. With nearly 1000 films releasing in a given year, obviously not all come in melodious packaging; some are good, majority are bad and as in this scenario, few are simply downright ugly.
So keeping with the spirit of Bollywood music (and the fact that I am highly bored this morning), I have come up with six categories which may sound bizarre but are still very relevant to one of our most popular forms of Entertainment.
There are a lot of things that are wrong in this world. If we do not raise our voices and try to bring justice to these issues at hand, we do ourselves and our society an injustice.
