I am not saying in any sense that
what happenedwhat’s happening inSydneyMelbourne can be excused & thereby forgotten but the whole object behind this post is to ask (few) intellectual people to stop forming judgment on this “country” on the basis of what is written in the papers and spoken by other intellectual individuals like them and to stop generalizing the entire “Australian community” as being racist. [….]
This was my standpoint in 2005 and in 2009, I continue to believe the same. Australia was home to me for 8 years, crucial growing up years to say the least, from the age of 16 to 23. A country of many firsts for me – first job, first car, reality checks, happy hour nights @ Uni bar, bunking work for a sun tan, crazy Halloween parties, generous tips during holiday season (Worked as a waitress in an Indian Curry House), toilet cleaning (part of my job profile @ Burger King), introduction to R&B, weekend movie marathons, my closest friends & best flat mates ever, two white Australian lads, Dave & Elliot – so as is obvious by now, this is an emotional topic for me. And yes, touchy too. O Boy, it pisses me no ends, reading headlines tagging Australia, one of the safest countries in today’s times, as racist.
To explain it in simple words – I consider myself as much an Ozzie as an Indian. Australia(ns?) and my experiences there have a lot to do with what I am today, not by monetary value or stature, but as a human being. Some may argue that I was plain lucky, but let me assure you that there are many many more falling within the same “lucky” bracket then those falling outside it.
I am obviously not implying that they sit on their arses and do jack shit – The Australian government & authorities are very capable and follow the rules by the book – and those responsible will be punished appropriately (sorry but yes, I have more faith in their judicial system than in ours… do you blame me?).
So for now let’s just stop magnifying every small incident to the size of a mammoth racial calamity. And then haven’t you heard?- people who live in glass houses shouldn’t throw stones.

Heya – I’ve seen heaps if blog posts on this and even blogged about it myself (Link).
Born and bred in Melbourne and I just think that the media is hyping everything up. Am tired of defending myself and my country to people who think every white person is mad at the more-intelligent indian out to get their jobs.
Another great post highlighting the same sort of thing: Link

Well I just want to say that I have lived in Melbourne,Australia for four months and YES I have been a victim of racist attack. Well I agree with sakshi that Australians are very friendly and nice people. They seem to be at first sight but what’s going on inside their mind is anybody’s guess.
I was in Australia in 2007. I used to live in Ashburton suburb of Melbourne. One night I was making a call from telstra booth to parents back home in India. I noticed group of youngsters in a car drove passed the road adjacent to the booth while staring at us.After 10 to 15 minutes they all came and turned their car towards the road close to the booth and threw eggs at me. It was just my luck that they failed in their motive as the eggs landed just close to me. I was with my brother. I fear to think that what they would have done had I been all alone.
This was not the only case that an Indian like me encountered. Nowadays there are around 95000 Indian students In Australia. There have been hundred of cases where Indian students have been attacked with RODS and STICKS and some even have been found murdered in mysterious circumstances. And recent Aussie Government report says that attack on Indians were indeed RACISTS.
Well It’s great Sakshi that you had a great time in Aussie land but the reality is that Aussies fear Indians taking away their jobs as they are hardworking and intellectuals. Due to their insecurity Aussie youngsters have started targetting Indians, while in some cases specially calling them”YOU INDIANS GO BACK”. WIth due respect to Australians I just want to ask, are these signs of FRIENDSHIP AND KINDNESS??

Umm hey…been living in Sydney for the past 9 years and the relative balance to answer this correctly.
Is Australia racist? Hell no…but there is a massive undercurrent of racism in their society. Ethnicities are still segregated by offensives terms aka ‘wog’, ‘poms’ etc. Of course it aint easy being brown post 9-11 in a white country, particularly a country as inward looking as Austalia. Moreover, rather than acknowledging it, Australia choses to ignore this growing ugly problem.
There seems to be a media blackout on any new reports of the attacks. Aus public generally thinks we are whinging…but being honest here…indians aren’t afforded the dignity of someone..say from Europe, brazil, UK etc.
The general consensus (not just in AU btw) is of us being hairy, smelly people of filth, poverty and squalor. It’s a social handicap to be indian coz all they see is Apu from the simpsons and some corny, comical caricature from pop culture.
This isn’t helped by the morons that reinforce these stereotypes by refusing to bathe, trim the body foliage and not partake any deo.
We are seen as caricatures from 711, or call centre desk monkeys. I’ve suffered racism in most of it’s forms…aggressive (aka ganging up on you) and the passive prejudice variety.
These bleeding heart nationalist aussies get all defensive…think they are ‘good people’…but the fact is NOT ONE OF THEM will come to help or stop an ongoing racial attack or humiliation if it happens in front of them(multiple personal experiences speaking here). Bad things DO happen when good people do nothing huh?
And nothing angers me more than self-righteous WHITE people telling how benovelent they are…while hanging on to their subtil imperialist complex. That’s followed by ignorant ‘Uncle Tom’ indians who are happy ‘house slaves as it were.
Dignity is not the rental estate of some melaninly challeged race. Its my birthright, not anyone’s to secede.
There’s issues on both sides. Both sides perpetuate stereotypes and the hateful status quo. Only one side is violent about it.
Btw my reasons for moving to Aus where :
a] A violently troubled domestic situation b] A 6 year realtionship was measured (at the time) in economic viability.
My point being India ain’t exactly morally exempt either. The sickening feudal greed of money, casteism and support for blatantly racist products like Fair n lovely etc.
Back to my point, AUS does have its issues with racism, so does India. Only one is violent about it
p.s – FYI I’m a clean, neutral smelling multiple-soap washing, articulate indian dude who grew up on pop culture- the smiths et al. Despite that, I’ve been humiliated multiple times. PLEASE DO NOT disavow my truth by blaming ‘victim mentality and other such bullshit.

We are not racists it is other cultures perception as shown here ..if you cannot learn to interact to a friendly gesture and perceive it as to I wonder what that aussie is really thinking kind of says it all dont you think..in which case it is actually the australians being victimised by other cultures .. many cultures have australians depicted as racist by these sorts of comments in threads but when I read them I am seeing predjudism at work if you stop and ask what is it that we do not like about you I am sure they will say nothing about you is wrong … its a bit of a downer that many aussies feel unliked by others because of stereotyping comments …and many australians do not have an issue with other cultures where we do feel disrespected because of certain stereotypingand lack of understanding… we like to interact with people but most cultures shut out australians.. and I believe this is because of claims like in these threads such as..
defending myself and my country to people who think every white person is mad at the more-intelligent indian out to get their jobs.
Of course it aint easy being brown post 9-11 in a white country

its that sort of attitude that creates racial critism the person who posted most of this who has not given a name I would call a racial radical because according to his personal experiences he hates australians.. aussies dont show this kind of racial slander towards this great nation .. I would suggest you come out of the one nation communities and interact with the australian culture as it is far more easy for the mulicultures in australia to interact wth the australian culture as there are numerous cultures within australia to be able to interact with all of them I have asian friends I have indian friends I also have numerous european friends .. we australians cannot interact with so many different cultures but you could try to interact with us ..
cheers be well and stay safe
