The Bookworm Me

ME 066 Honestly speaking I have never been much of a book reader. This I say because for many reading books on UFO stories, World’s famous psychopath murderers or Most haunted places on the globe aren’t exactly considered ‘real’ reading materials. But what to do such was I, the normal reading materials failed to interest me; no thrill, no suspense, not real (even the non-fiction ones looked dubious to me).

But life as they say is unpredictable and the past few months have proved this point in more than one way to me. So like many things mysterious, one fine morning I chucked aside the habit of the past and picked up Ishq And Mushq by Priya Basil and since then there has been no looking back.

And I realized a few things:

a) I prefer brown authors

b) Relatable stories are a must or I end up losing interest

c) Social topics fascinate me the most

d) Flashy front covers attract me

In the last 2 months aka. my exile or an escape as some like to call it, I read. Read a lot. One of the few things that helped me in maintaining my sanity. Though Starbucks cappuccino continues to top the list.

Here’s a list of books I am done with and was hoping some of you guys could suggest a few names that you found interesting and so could I.

  •  A Thousand Splendid Suns by Khaled Hosseini
  • Harry Potter and the Philosopher’s Stone (No more Potters for a while)
  • Gay Bombay by Parmesh Shahani
  • Weight Loss by Upamanyu Chatterjee (Bizarre)
  • Marley and I by John Grogan (A must for all canine lovers)
  • Goddess for Hire by Sonia Singh
  • Animal’s People by Indra Sinha (Not for the faint hearted)
  • Eleven Minutes by Paulo Coelho

Currently reading The Kite Runner by Khaled Hosseini.

For me, anything by Ayn Rand is heaven(fiction). But I am biased.
I found the alchemist better than 11 minutes. India Unbound is good too. mistress of spices is a good read.

I don’t think you should be reading “Kite Runner” in your current state of mind. It will depress the most cheerful person. So it’s not going to help your mood. On the other hand it will show you what a blessed life you have! :)

Read “God of Small Things” You’ll either love it or hate it!

Kartography – my first Pakistani book. Loved it.

Feast of Roses – Historical Fiction at it’s best.

Married Woman – About a lesbian stuck in a traditional marriage.

Finish these & I’ll recommend some more.

Hey There!
Landed on your blog by chance and found certain things quite interesting – first I loved this UI, very vibrant and catchy :-) . Next some of your posts are quite interesting. Will try to be more regular reader now! BTW have you read some other Indian Authors like Fasting Feasting by Anita Desai, Suitable Boy by Vikram Seth or how abt bestseller of Wodehouse like Stiff Upper Lips Jeeves! I recent read Stiff…and found it to be one of the best from Wodehouse.

Do give William Dalrymple’s “Last Mughal” a read… it’s a tome, but worth the effort. Also worth a shot is Shalimar the Clown by Salman Rushdie (if you haven’t already read it).

@ Sarah : Thanks. Always great to hear such kind words. ;) As for enjoying the Big Apple, well I did but like most things good, this too came to an end. Back in Mumbai now. And believe me you, it SUCKS.

Try ‘The Flanders Panel’ if you like Chess (the ending is a drab though)

The Bookseller of Kabul, maybe?
