Splitsvilla Or Shamesville?
I consider myself as a 28 year old with an equally active testosterone and other such related hormonal behaviour as any 18- or 20-year-old. And yet I don’t get the fascination (some) youths have developed for an ongoing reality show called Splitsvilla aired on MTV India.
In a nutshell Splitsvilla consists of 20 women vying for attention of two young men. The folks behind this reality show would like us to believe that the concept of the show is the search for True Love (along with a fetching sum of Rs 5 lakh.) Each week one girl’s fate rests in the hands of the two men, who have the power to vote her out of the show.
Reality Shows today are the "in-thing" and like others, I too immensely enjoy(ed) watching many of them. However I fail to see the point behind a show such as this and that too being heavily promoted by a channel responsible in so many ways for shaping the minds of our youth.
The only possible explanation I can think of is that viewers of such kinds crave for two things – humiliation (of others) and skin show. And Splitsvilla happens to suffice both these urges. 20 something girls going all the way – from dressing low to flashing their bulbs assets, from back stabbing to in-front of the camera ridiculing one another, from belly dancing to bathroom tub caressing – they are letting nothing hold them back.
And what makes matters worse is the reason behind such crass behaviour - two men, worth nothing. And I mean nothing. Thin, squirmy, butt ugly, all backed by high headiness – that seems to be their only qualification. Frankly I wouldn’t be surprised if tomorrow it is revealed that the boys belonged to the sponsor’s clan or the production/channel’s household. So here we have two absolute losers tossing girls around as per their whims and fancy.
Which gets me to the most important point - while the channel, viewers and the boys are having a gala time at the expense of the participating girls – is 15 seconds of fame a good enough reason for these contestants to completely demean themselves?
Not looking at it from a feminist view point, as a life lesson I believe nothing is worth more than one’s own self-respect let alone mortifying yourself on national television not once but umpteen number of times. While MTV may call their creation as ‘testing of one’s character’, I simply see it as TRP game play, being done at all costs.

We all have a right to express our views. In many instances; it will be against ours and in some; with us. To hear them out is 'decency' but to let them get to you is 'weakness'.

I personally have a intense dislike for this reality show. I just hate it. I was very much hooked on to Roadies 5.0 because it was a totally different kind of show. But couldn’t complete the series because of work commitments. But i despised this show the first time it came on screen. According to me there is a certain image of sexy women and when you see them this annoyingly close you don’t ever want to go near one. So rather than spoil the image, its nice to ignorant. But seriously, its a dirty and cheap show. They could have had a bit better if all girls were not so mindless and there was some more classiness. Anyways I guess there are going to be people who are going to make such crap and people who going to see such crap. Thankfully I am not one of them.

I haven’t seen this show and never really bother with REALITY SHOWS unless they are QUIZ programs that to the sensible kind like say BQC and BLOCKBUSTERS when I was younger or JEOPARDY and the WEAKEST LINK until couple of years back.
I completely agree with Saakshi do WOMEN or MEN really have to demean themselves in this manner….while I havent seen this particular show out in India I have seen a few AMERICAN Reality Shows off and on while flipping channels, I am really amazed how people fall for such garbage and actually sit and watch this stuff.
I have the same opinion about TALENT HUNT contests, those who have the CHARISMA will Shine sooner or later Talent Show’s regardless, but atleast the talent shows have the crutch of supposedly providing opportunity to aspirants.
Reality shows such as Big Brother, or Fear Factor and such are a different kettle of fish altogether for me they have ZERO entertainment value, to me REALITY shows are like PORN you’ve seen one you’ve seen all….

This show makes me laugh and angry at the same time. I can’t imagine a single reason why 20 idiotic women should try to hook two people who are so much more worse than they are. The show is pretty pathetic - though the bitchy backbiting is fun TV

Frankly Saks, i was going to write about this on my blog with the heading MTV Cheapvilla. This show is highly disgusting and you cant expect much as it comes from the makers of HH Roadies, which too is a benchmark for bitching and abusing. I seriously think all these reality shows are preplanned. Case in point is the Chetan saga on Bollywood ka ticket, which came in the news before the serial was broadcasted. Reality shows are just to make money, nothing else. All channels have alteast one running.

I think this continues with Indian television’s run of aping foreign reality shows. And who better than MTV? The parent channel (in the US atleast) now exclusively has such reality shows for finding divine, blissful love- from rockstars and pornstars, to teenage wannabes and their moms!

i haven’t seen it - but seems like a fair reflection of reality - why blame the show?

I hate splitsvilla! Roadies was good till its 3rd installment. 4th was only about Delhi people, chandigard people thing. 5.0 Was by far the worst part! How can girls and guys behave like that just to stay on in the show!
And splitsvilla! all is see are some dumb bimbos! Are the guys and the show even worth so much of humiliation on national television?

Fair reflection of reality… you’d wish!
I haven’t seen it either, but the hoardings up on SV Road have been a little hard to miss. Personally, I don’t really like the channel.. no moral issues with it - I just don’t find it entertaining. Backbiting and bitching caught live on TV makes for rather vicarious viewing - and i doubt if it says much about those viewing it! Would I personally do this if offered a chance? No. But I don’t think blaming the girls will help - it’s more a function of ‘getting a break’ for them than anything else. As it is for the boys. I doubt they’d see it as a ‘Reality show’ and more as an ‘act’ they have to put on to stay in the game.

I cannot agree with you more.I find it disgusting, deprecating and really pathetic to say the least. Even in ‘Get gorgeuos’ it is nastiness that is encourages.Little kids, as young as 7 and 8 really look up to the older ones and emulate them.Apart from setting(destroying) the general morale of the youth,(forget values here for a moment) these shows do nothing.
Well written and well said–esp as it comes from someone young. (So it is not like an oldie giving a talk-down)
Cheers

I believe the channel has a big role to play here. In their bid for TRPs they are ready to pick up any kind of concepts without giving a thought to its adverse effects. Surely the girls in this show have been to a certain extent pressured by the channel.

I too feel the channel needs to act more responsibly. Even though its one’s choice to participate in such dramas, things are on most occasion not as what they seem - probably its the channel and peer pressure that makes one act in a manner one wouldn’t normally do.
All said and done - its bad entertainment overall.

This one takes the cake.
“a channel responsible in so many ways for shaping the minds of our youth”
And all this while I thought it was youtube and not viacom shaping the minds of youth around the world.

I find that show terribly humiliating, and irritating. I dont understand why those girls would want to do all that they are doing for the sake of those two guys who are really nothing.. Vishal atleast has good looks, but whatever Varun has is nulllified by his attitude! And the show theme as such is soooooo cheap! Dumping women and getting people to watch it!!!

hey guys just relax don’t take it too seriously as in its just a tv show. secondly its just money making business and at the end its not all bout love at splitsvailla its bout making a lifetime career for the girls and boys at splitsvilla .thirdly i beleive this world is full of dogs and bitches and they do the same in real life ,the only difference is that they do it in a garb of diplomacy . the end would be MTV getting new VJ’s known by most of its views and the winners getting a career , for the rest of the participants they get a good exposure to the media .as far as the contention of the show being tilted towards being a skin show , i would say that skin business is the most ancient business and the viewers have an informed choice . So guys stop looking at the “bulb assets” but concentrate on the content .( laviciousness attracts most and resisting the temptations is the virtue required not only in the show but in life too . )
