Marketing Strategies, Featuring Shah Rukh Khan.

Though the final outcome is yet to be known – OSO or Saawariya, which of the two performed better at the box office? Bhai, my choice was toh clear, OSO was a stinker and Saawariya rocked. And no, this has nothing to do with (hottie) Ranbir Kapoor’s butt.

Couple of days back, apna King Khan was accused by some BCCI organizers for using India-Pak cricket matches as a publicity stunt for his newly released film. For those who aren’t familiar – Shah Rukh had attended the T20 World Cup Finals and was seen handing out music CD of his, then to be released film, Om Shanti Om. And more recently, he was also present for the India-Pak ODI final held in Jaipur along with co-actress Deepika Padukone.

Obviously the Bollywood badshah is quite miffed over these allegations.

I was invited by the BCCI itself and I was very happy. But now I am disappointed. Henceforth, I shall send only my children for the games and will ask them not to mention who their father is. As for me, I’ll avoid going for any cricket match altogether. [IndiaTimes]

If you ask me, this situation reminds me of a popular children’s short story, “The Boy Who Cried Wolf”, well sort off.

Shah Rukh brilliantly used T20 finals as a publicity platform for OSO, for crying out loud; he even wore the film’s name on his chest. Now it’s a totally different thing that he ended up giving us The Whacko Jacko fright but hey, without any doubts, his presence at cricket matches has definitely got more to do than just outing with kids.

And when fingers were raised – to back your actions by saying…

I am trying to make my children like sports in a nation where most parents are blamed for not encouraging their children to be sportsmen. How else do you think they will learn the beauty of sport?

In my opinion is quite lame. Seriously, whom is he trying to fool here?

I mean come on, everybody is aware of the fact that SRK leaves no stone unturned when it comes to publicizing his films and OSO is toh his own production. According to me, the man should have simply taken the BBCI folks into confidence, handed them few free OSO tickets and merchandise rather than adding fuel to the fire.

But maybe Shah Rukh’s marketing consultants think otherwise. As they say in Bollywood – “There is no such thing as bad publicity”.

[...] Ok. So finally I managed to watch this movie. Probably one of the most talked movies in recent weeks. SRK himself admitted that there is not a single TV Channel, Radio Station, News Paper, Magazine etc etc where he has not given interview or has not missed any opportunity to promote the movie. So much so, that when he was there in T20 World Cup Finals early this year, there was hue and cry on him using (abusing) every appearance of his as a promotional event, he was reported to have been distributing music CDs, which is fine I guess. I always happened to find this amusing piece on Saakshi’s blog which I feel may not be enough researched. Saakhi – I think you are getting a little unfair on Mr. Khan. I am not a great lover of most of his movies (esp the KJ ones or even ‘Main hoon Na’ and so on) leaving the ones like swadesh or kabhi haan kabhi naa, but I think the man has lot of things to boast about. With no god father, and by sheer hard work and lots or brains he has made quite a place for himself. I think all of us know that.

Anyway, good take (at least a different one )

Haven’t seen either of OSO or Saawaria but I heard that OSO is beating Saawaria like anything.

I don’t see anything wrong in it. Whats wrong in marketing your product, offcourse ethically. I don’t see any thing unethical in SRK wearing and OSO T-shirt to a cricket match.

We all market ourself don’t we. When we go to a party we dress up well for what ,to look good. Look good for whom? Marketing is here pre-historic times. So why blame SRK. He is a mortal too and greedy like everyone else.

Does BCCI wast any time to market cricket. When SRK went to SA for the finals and was standing for a picture along with the victorius india team.Shard Pawar and the entire brigade came running to stand along with him, what was that for?

Nandan – Personally, I don’t consider SRK a God’s sent gift to the Hindi Film Industry. Agreed he is an entertainer but an actor, not so sure. Though I found his performances in films like Devdas, Swades & more recently, Chak De quite bearable.

And I totally agree with you, what this man has achieved without any support or strong backing is indeed very remarkable. (The same reason stands behind my liking for Rakhi Sawant).

However I believe if you are in a position to make a change then you should lap-up the opportunity. SRK can definitely come out with better films but then again, he thinks of them as “products” rather than an artistic creation. Guess he too thinks on the same lines as RVG.

Simon – I never said there is anything wrong with it. All I am saying is that “if you are doing it, than have the balls to accept it”. The man is using such a lousy excuse as if people are too blind to notice.

Asuph – Very funny but I rather go with Ms. Sawant. (Ps – good to see you here again).

Sakshi…SRK is a really good actor and he does use his money and potential to make good movies..Remember ‘Paheli’???
But,as you have rightly pointed out,if he had gone there for marketing his new movie(which is as clear as the blue sky)..he should have had the guts to own up and not do such a lousy cover up…

The writer is on the dot here. Shahrukh thinks that he can get away with any crap and unfortunately its true to a large extent. Om Shanti Om was utter bullshit but it continues to make money. And as the writer pointed out, he looks at his films as products and not art and therefore it wouldn’t be wrong to say that “money” is all he cares about.

And yes it was in bad taste to use his kids as a marketing excuse.

Agree. I wonder why he did that because usually he has been frank and candid on him being marketing his movies. i heard him last say (on MTV with Cyrus) that he has given interview to every magazine, channel, news paper, website on OSO.

Lets go back a little and try to understand the situation better. SRK’s anger seems to be more towards BCCI and that looks like as a response to someone in BCCI who accused him of selling himself. I am sure all would agree that BCCI didn’t invite SRK (and kids) to have them enjoy the match, they themselves leave no oppertunity to market cricket (by all means).

Probably if you can dig more (more then just an Indiatimes blurb) then we might see a different picture altogether and may be a reason for him acting like this.

Ahh.. come on Sakshi. It could be that his kid did ask him to go to the match, isn’t that possible. SRK isn’t a star to his kid he is his dad, any kid at that age would go bonkers to watch a cricket match with his dad. I have done that, now SRK happens to be star, and in India and Pakistan they are treated like god and its natural for them to be in the limelite where ever they go.

I am sure Ramiz Raja ( Ex- Pakistan cricketer) follows hindi movies hence he asked SRK few questions about his latest movie , what do you expect him to tell ” please talk cricket “.

And have you thought how big a marketing gimmic it is to have SRK in the comentry box by the channel.

I am not writing this out of sympathy for SRK nor because of any fan following. I think we do blow things out of proportion as in this case.

Simon – What re! Listen to Uncle Asuph. ;)

On a serious note though, boss its nothing personal. Maybe we both are correct, it was an outing with kids along with a little media publicity – only the ones involved know the truth, all we can do is speculate.

Hope to see you around…

No no, I was not getting sensetive ashup. I was trying to hold my ground.
I was running out of word to counter attack Saakshi’s previous comment.

I guess Saakshi is right, we can only speculate and put forth our views.

The reason BCCI invitd srk to the matches w/reasons or no reasons, is tht srk had hosted an event 4 the indian cricket team b/f leaving 4 the world cup and tht too along w/priyanka chopra. So probably the BCCI took it as srk IS interestd in cricket and thy invitd him OR they just thought marketing cricket w/srk would be big for the sport. Aftr all its the cricketers that are getting more endorsements than other athletes in all the sports in india. Now we know that indian cricket team are also on its way to become a brand rather than being a sport. Also, cricket is lifeless w/o support of the backbone of bollywood, and we the fans are merely fundamentalists who praise the cricketeers too much whn they win, and punish the cricketers in burning their posters and destroying their windows when they loose.

Dear,friend
Sharukh Khan, the NO 1 hero and actor in the Bollywood today, was

born on 2 Nov 1965 in New Delhi. He had no godfather, no love story

for him to begin with but quite amazingly a negative characterisation

which he had to check himself with. Might be – who knows he opted

for that but what an exhibition of a skill!
