The thing is I prefer watching films which have a beginning, an ending and something worthwhile throw in-between. Though some prefer to look at deeper meanings via abstract notions, I believe films are meant for entertainment and that’s exactly what they should be doing – and while doing so they also manage to teach a few life lessons, then even better.
So when I talk about Kareena – Shahid starrer Jab We Met, many expected the film to bomb at the box office – inexperienced director, previous failures of the leading pair and but of course the real-life break up of one of Bollywood’s most talked about jodi. Frankly speaking, I too didn’t think much of the film before I went to watch it on the big screen. I was under the impression that it would be your typical boy-meets-girl story, family opposing and finally love triumphing funda. But I have to admit, I couldn’t be more wrong.
Yes, agreed director Imtiaz Ali’s film is very much on the typical lines but the man has done a commendable job by presenting it in a refreshing way. Here are some of the reasons which I believe make Jab We Met a worthwhile watch.
- According to me Imtiaz Ali is the main hero here. Jab We Met is a simple love story and he has handled it with just the right dosage of casualness and drama. Never is the film overbearing on your senses and that’s the best bit. He has presented Kareena in a way which even Karan Johar couldn’t in his film Kabhi Kushi Kabhi Gham. The chemistry between the leading couple is fantastic and once again the credit for this has to be given to the director.
- Kareena Kapoor with her role as Geet has managed to pull off a Preity Zinta, in fact even better. Supported by spunky lines, Kareena’s facial expressions speak volumes and precisely present the zest of life demanded by the character. Seriously, one of her finest performances till date. Oh! And did I mention she is looking hot in those Patiala outfits.
- Honestly, I never expected much from Shahid Kapur. Ya fine, he looks good, great dancer and acts decently well but yaar, to be able to emote so beautifully and that too with silence – is freaking impressive or whot!
- One of the reasons why I really enjoyed Cheeni Kum was because of the fantastic conversations between the leading characters. Similarly, Jab We Met is filled with meaningful yet zappy dialogues and at times the characters utter such un-expected lines that you can’t help but chuckle.
- Song Mauja Hi Mauja, though it comes at the very end, it’s well worth the wait. Shahid is looking like a stud and Kareena a studnee.
The thing is if a film-maker wants to make a good film, I mean really really wants to make a good film then he will make a good film – and this is what Jab We Met is. It is a good, saaf-sutra entertainment with a beginning, the middle and an end.
Now I am only hoping that this isn’t the end of the Shahid-Kareena coupling, at least not in the reel-life.

[...] morning I must have heard the song “Tum Se Hi” from the film, Jab We Met just about a couple of hundred times. So obsessed have I got that I actually created a new playlist [...]
