And Dutts The Way: 6 Years in Prison

The Law is Right, at least in actor (and now a prisoner) Sanjay Dutt’s nearly 14 years ongoing Trail. Dutt was was found guilty under the under Arms Act for possessing an AK-56 rifle and 9mm Chinese make pistol, obtained from co-accused Abu Salem prior to the blasts. And finally today, The Terrorist and Disruptive Activities (Prevention) Act court handed Dutt his prize punishment for the crime committed - rigorous imprisonment for six years for illegal possession of arms. Surely the actor, his family & close associates must be in a total baffled state of mind; I mean come on, this isn’t some Bollywood production, this is Hard-core reality and 6 years is a pretty long time.
When I heard the news, frankly speaking I was shocked too – not because I didn’t expect him to be thrown behind bars but I was thinking of a more lenient term, 2 to 3 years max. But on reading Judge Pramod Dattaram Kode’s reasoning behind his decision, there’s no room left for arguments.
- Sanjay Dutt was present at a dinner party attended by fugitive gangster Dawood Ibrahim.
- Sanjay Dutt had committed a series of offences and that he was mature when he committed these offences.
- Dutt had made co-accused Yusuf Nalwala commit an offence as well.
Plus when you think about the number of people dead & those traumatized by the 1993 Bomb Blasts, 11 convicts handed with Death Penalties and others sentenced to Life Imprisonment – with just couple of years in prison (minus the 16 months off the 6 years), Dutt seems to have walked off very lightly.
As for the rumored 50 crore riding on Sanjay Dutt’s back, well hardly any sympathies go to Bollywood since everybody knew of the actor’s court rounds and therefore those affected, should have been wise with the monetary decisions.
The reaction from the actor’s lawyers comes as no surprise; they have announced their decision to appeal against the verdict in the Supreme Court. However in the mean time, Dutt would be re-living his Central Jail days. Though not a big fan of the actor, heart does go out to him and his family but on the whole it was a good day at the court for our judiciary system and I can’t help but applaud Judge Kode’s approach and his rulings.
But before I end, here is a side-story I heard from a Bollywood affiliated friend who happens to visit the same swami, or Astro-Guru as they say in modern terms.
Sanjay Dutt in his previous birth was in fact a very powerful King. Happy with his kingdom, family and wealth but one day he found out that his beloved Rani uff wife was cheating on him. Obviously not very pleased with the discovery, he got her killed by his loyal guards.
However getting his wife murdered didn’t end up too well on his karmic chart and so today whatever downs and suffering he is going through is in fact the punishment of his previous birth’s sins.
Believe it or not, well I leave it up to you.

We all have a right to express our views. In many instances; it will be against ours and in some; with us. To hear them out is 'decency' but to let them get to you is 'weakness'.

The value of sending Sanjay Dutt to jail…
…has much declined between 1993 and 2007
Editorials in major newspapers are unanimous—that Sanjay Dutt’s celebrity status should not come in the way of justice, and hence the jail term handed out to him for possession of illegal arms …

I am very upset with the verdict at one end.. because he is a decent guy..
At the other end, happy that the law does not consider actor as super human beings…

Clap Clap Clap! Atleast this renews my faith in the Indian Judiciary, shows that there is somebody who cannot be bribed/influenced and coerced. Sanjay has our symathies because of the lovely characters he played on screen, but that doesn’t change the wrong deeds he did in real life. And I think he enjoyed life better than umpteen others who went through 14 years of trial and now he must repent.

Though this case will have no bearing on my fondness for Sanju Baba, i still believe, he did the wrong thing and has to do his time behind bars. Now time to get the other nangu pangu (Salman Khan) and throw him behind bars for an equal amount of time (at least) for all the great things he has done.
Its a great time for the Indian judiciary. Look at the procession that is going in. Jessica Lal’s murderer, Shibu Soren, 2 fellows to be hanged for killing Beant Singh, 11 people to hang for the bombay blasts.
Some more to get. HKL Bhagat (is he still alive?) & RK Dhawan (anti sikh riots 1984), Advani (communal riots), Modi (ethnic cleansing of muslims), Balls Thokre oops Bal Thackery and his monkey gang (Shiv Sena) (for 1993 riots which led to the Bombay Blasts). Let the fun continue….. But seriously, lets start with Sallu miyan….please.

While it does seem sad given that I like him as a actor, the enormity of what he did has been forgotten by most given his recent screen persona which was so lovable. I was particularly impressed by the judge who combined a reasonbly hard ruling with deceny (read the article in today’s Indian Express).

“Believe it or not, well I leave it up to you.”
I dont believe.
One more thing I have noticed. Most people are saying that sanjay dutt will be out son using lopehools in indian judiciary system.

Well I am no fan of Sanjay Dutt (ok a bit of a fan..).
On one hand , its commendable that the law did not bend for the high and mighty. On the other hand - some points come to mind
1. Being at Dawood’s party is no crime - simply because you HAVE to be there to flatter the Bhai or u don’t do business in Mumbai . AAJ Tak showed a clipping of Anu Malik & Anil Kapoor singing & Dancing for the Don in DuBai. So lets get them too
Should we imprison people to reform them or only to punish them. Sanjay might have done well on the reform parameter - considering his behavior in the last 14 years
But I can already hear people say ” lets not be a soft state - lets make an example of him” Wat about Afzal Guru - make an example of him & show your hardness (no pun intended ).

The thing is people dont realise that it could have much wrose for Sanjay Dutt considering that it is afterall Terrorism related case. His people should be thankful that its only 6 years and not 10.
He deserved what he got.

The guy is an idiot surely. Even after he came out of jail, he kept his contacts with the underworld ( the whole phone transcript between him and anees and mahesh manjrekar etc…). That time in jail should have put the fear of god into him but it did not. He may be a great guy and all that but a crime is a crime. Salman Khan should be next in line.

nahin yaar… there was no need to link the Mumbai blasts case & the Dutt trial. they were two very different cases, with some co-accused being the sole linkages. it was a politically motivated indiction when it happened 14 yrs ago.
the fact that he’s a much loved filmstar obviously should play no role in being lenient to him, however that being said, i still feel that he should have been tried separately and sentence separately as well. judge kode could obviously not be lenient to dutt, considering the kinda sentences he’s meted out to other accused in the case.
in any case, i am sure this will go to the SC and another long drama will be played out. hopefully at the SC, the two cases may be separated…
will miss the deadly dutt though

I think the whole “actor-actress” thing is highly over-rated in India. I mean, they’re just human beings doing a job, just like the rest of us. It so happens that they get filmed while doing the job that they are paid to do. Big deal!!!! One guy decides on a storyline and another bunch of twerps pretend to be what they are not.
Though I am fond of Sanjay, he made a mistake and is serving time for it. Wouldn’t we be made to do the same if we had done the same thing? So, I think he got his just desserts. What is really sad is that so may lives were lost because some people, a couple of years ago, thought it was fun to blow a couple of bombs. I’m sure many unrest souls are resting in peace now that they have justice. This decision does renew my faith in the Indian constitution. Atleast someone does their job without being bribed around here!!!!
