Delhi Heights

So people after long grueling 8 months of hard work (yes I do have a job), finally I am going on a 7 days break to New Delhi. Nope, would have loved to travel to US and be with my dearest friend but according to my family, they are still getting over my expenses from last year’s trip. And so I have no choice but to settle for the capital city.

As per Familywallah’s reports the weather there has been good, just like Mumbai it’s been raining at regular intervals. Hopefully it would stay like that…..anything is better than the scorching sun.

Mostly everything has been pre-planned:

Blueberry Cheesecake at Big Chill, Samosas & Jalebis from local Halwai Shop, Pyramid pastry from Standard Bakery in Patel Nagar, Long Island Ice Tea from TGI at Vasant Vihar and most importantly Stick Kulfi from RaviRaj at Karol Bagh.

And in case you are wondering, yes I go to Delhi only with the sole purpose of hogging my heart out.

On the blogging front, I will try to blog while hogging so that you can sulk over my fulfillment.

Whenever I am in Delhi I never miss an opportunity to have a pure veg thali at the restaurant at Hotel Alka, Connaught Place. Locals tell me it is the best place to have a thali. Ofcourse my all time best veg thali in India is at “Chowki Dhaani” in Jaipur, Rajashthan.

Hmmm…..seems like you have a lot of suggestions on the food front. Ideally, each of these suggestions must be accompanied by a ‘Long Island Iced Tea’…the potent version i might add.

Methinks enough of those and Delhi shall rock the way you want it to. Without those and you shall have to rely on the prowess of Delhi-ites.

Personally, i’d tell people i was outta town(Mumbai)….and then i’d STAY in town and party my brains out. I figure i’d be better off in Mumbai than in Delhi but then again…..Punjabi mundis are a diff lot na…..:)

What are you? A vegetarian? Delhi to me means kababs and biryani more than anything else.

Re: Hogging and blogging. Looks like I will have some serious competition now :)

Biryani for me is the “Dum Biryani” kind that is made from scratch (as opposed to by way of blending of semi prepared components) in Randher (a suburb of Surat, Gujrat) or Hyderabad (sadly don’t know the name of the state, but I am talking of the city of Charminar ). In Bombay, “Delhi Darbar” Restaurant in Colaba area used to have a decent Dum Biryani.

Delhi is good at, what the good folks in Bombay used to call “Yakhni Pulaw” or “Akhni Pulow”. Very little good Dum ki Biryani in Delhi that I know of. Ofcourse USA has the worst instant blend type Biryani. I will even take the Delhi Biryani/Akhni Pulaw over USA Biryani.

Anyone from Delhi here please let me know if there is a restaurant there which has a good Hyderabadi or Randher style Dum Ki Biryani.

Shaan: There are a lot of obscure corners in Delhi where awesome meat-based dishes can be found. During my years there, I spent quite some time hunting down these areas but now I can’t remember most of them. Off-hand, only one place comes to mind: Karim’s near Jama Masjid. The biryani there appealed to even my over-picky tastebuds (blame it on years of Lucknow food..nothing beats that, you know.). There are some small eateries in Mukherji Nagar-Civil Lines area (one of them is called Samraat Hotel, I think). They used to have the juiciest tangri-kebabs and just perfectly done naans. The biryani was also above acceptable. But if you really want to taste the ‘real’ biryani (for me, at least, that’s what’s real), make a trip to Lucknow sometime. Over 40 spices, dead slow cooking, meat that melts in your mouth and every grain of rice stuffed with heavenly smells.. I just drooled on my laptop. :)

P.S: Oh Sakx, I forgot this is your blog (hehe..food does that to me sometimes). Hope you are having fun. Last I heard, Delhi was a dry furnace with 45 C everyday. Maybe it’s better now. Wouldn’t want you getting tandoori-roasted yourself, eh?

Shantanu – Me and competition to you, not a chance re. You are a Pro. :)

Harsh – Wow, dude you seriously should think about becoming a Delhi Foodie guide. As for the weather, well it’s HOT HOT HOT. But I am armed with bottles of Sunscreen lotion…and won’t let the temp get me down.

Tonight I attack Blueberry Cheesecake. ;)

Harsh, the Biryani at Kareem’s is the Delhi-Luchnow style Biryani. In Bombay (as I remember it) it is called Akhni Pulaw. I agree it is good but I am craving for some really good Randher/Hyderabadi style Dum Biryani. I will be in Delhi (unfortunately will not get a chance to visit Bombay this time) in the next ten days and I want to have one good Biryani meal.

Lucknow/Rampur/Moradabad etc have very good and amazingly tasty food. I understand what you mean when you say that years of staying on Lucknow has spoilt you.

Ramit at this point Dhumphukt seems like my only choice but I am still not sure if they have the Biryani a la Randher/Hyderabad style or the Lucknow/Delhi type.

I have noted everyone’s recommendation and will give it a try.

Shaan: Yakhni Palav is actually Kashmiri by origin. Dum Biryani actually is from Awadh (or Lucknow). In Delhi you can get both; I am not very familiar with Mumbai. However, if you want to go five-star try the biryani at Dum Pukht (ITC Grand Maratha); they have the authentic Dum Biryani there. BTW, I don’t want to promote my blog here, but I have two posts on Kababs there (Lucknow and Delhi choices).

Harsh: Absolutely. Karim’s in Delhi is a favorite of mine. And Lucknow has a lot of choices; the most well-known one being Tunde Ka Kabab in the Chowk area.
