Cheeni Vs. Lokhandwala: Which do you prefer?

So this coming Friday we shall witness the Box-Office war between two budhas, namely Amitabh Bachchan and Sanjay Dutt and their respective films, Cheeni Kum (CK) and Shootout at Lokhandwala (SAL).

Agreed, both films belong to totally different genres, CK is more off a comedy flick whereas SAL is your typical gangster film. But then again logically thinking, one film is bound to be doomed.

Now if you ask me as to which of these two films is on my priority list, well I have been suffering from Bollywood frenzy right from my young days, so without any doubt I will be watching CK and SAL this very weekend, irrespective of their published reviews.

However, Cheeni Kum is what has got my fancy at the moment. From whatever has been shown in the promos, it guarantees to be laugh riot but not on the lines David Dhawan’s slapstick kinds or Priyadarsan’s confusing ones. Amitabh Bachchan (sporting a ponytail) seems to be the perfect actor to fit the role of 64 years-old chief in love with 34 years-old unmarried woman, enacted by the ever-talented Tabu and how they together convince the leading lady’s 48 years-old father aka. Master of Comical Errors, Paresh Rawal. With the presence of such fantastic star-cast and very intriguing storyline, this film is a sure-shot winner.

On the other hand, Shootout at Lokhandwala as I mentioned earlier appears to be one of those dime-a-dozen, Mumbai Police wiping out the Underworld films. Though in my opinion, the only man to master the art, atleast in genre is none other but the tainted Ram Gopal Verma. Now whether director Sanjay Gupta and his gang of ten macho men are able to pull off a stunner here, well only time will tell. The only two reasons for my watching this film are, firstly Sanjay Dutt looks awesome (in the promos) and secondly Vivek Oberoi appears to be a stinker, yet again. Hopefully the faith of this film won’t be as dark as Mr. Gupta’s last release, Zinda or else this will surely be the end of the road for likes of Viveks and Tusshars. But then again Tusshar can always depend on his big sister and her saas-bahu serials.

So yeah, from the looks of it I have a gut feeling that the sugar-less love story will be far more worth your time and money than Lokhandwala sightseeing.

Last night while watching Shootout at Lokhandwala (SAL) I was beaming with joy, gloating in a pool of pride and all this not because I am proud of Apoorva Lakhia’s directorial skills but because I was spot on withmy prediction. Yes people, Shootout at Lokhandwala is a complete bukwass philum. I really feel sorry for all those who expected this gangster rap to be rocking, but yaar if you mix 5 star class pasta with roadside

My vote for Shootout at Lokhandwala. Cheeni Kam i s one of those [ second movie ] where Amitabh gets a chance to show his JAWANI back after Nishabd … isn’t Jaya getting affected from this?

Count me in for SAL. Not for CK though, I’ve a mindblock against it since I heard the title track…its a rip-off from a 15 year old Tam film.

My prediction

Chaddi Kum Banyaan Zyada will flop. Paresh will steal once again (Remember Aankhen) every scene effortlessly as if he was stealing candy from a child. No this is not a repeat of Nisabdh. In this one it is Big B who wears the long oversized Banyaan and a micro mini underwear and seduces Tabu.

SOAL will have a blowout first week. Overall ify.

CK promos didn’t impress me. In fact, I am kind of put-off by it. On the other hand, SAL promos look promising. And we have Sanjay Gupta as the ‘driver’ here. Not taking box office records into consideration, most of his recent movies were worth a watch and good time-pass. So, I’m ‘betting’ for SAL.

well they’re both AB movies na? :D
Cheeni Kum! Cheeni Kum! SAL sounds sort of ghisa pita although i’ve noticed that when a movie has Amrita Singh and AB in it, it generally has something cool about it.

Rishi, Ideasmith, Shaan and Bikram – You people are such spoilsports…I tell you. ;)

Full2Enjoy – Watch CK first though.

Amrita & Twilight Fairy – I love you gals. :)

Just for Bikram – As a matter of fact Sanjay Gupta along with director Aprurva don’t have a good Box-Office record. The only reason why people pay attention to Mr. Gupta is cause of his close association with Sanjay Dutt. And pls films like Zinda, Plan and Musafir are not timepass they are pathetic.

‘Zinda’ was pathetic. ‘Hey Bhagwan – Uthaale. Mujhe nahi….’ (guess kisko). Then what do U have to say about Kaante? Maybe it’s copy of some hollywood flick but we don’t bother ’bout it untill we know it. It was a rocking movie anyway.

In SAL, AB plays a DCP or somethin. And the movie’s been BO-rocker whenever he does that (not counting his starting days of 2nd innings – movies like bare miya chhote miya). Take Khakee for example. BO records are not the true yard-stick for judging any movie. RHTDM didn’t get a nice opening. But today, we look @ it as one of the nicest loveey-doveey movie.

My guess is CK will flop. Personally, I find both AB (in this role) and Tabu (always) irritating! Add to this, the title number “cheeni kum hai, cheeni kum hai” gets on my nerves!

SAL I feel will sail through due to its hype, whatever its flaws may be. I hope this means something good for my favorite (but despised by most others) Vivek Oberoi!

Bikram – Yaar, Gupta ke liye Bhagwan ko kyun yaad kar rehe ho. Anyways, Kaante was good cause it was different from the rest in terms of direction, the feel…the look but all this was then. Today we have had tons of Kante likes, plus Gupta’s treatment is now getting boring. Not all can get away like the Chopras and Johars who repeat the same formula again and again and still manage to recover their monetary inputs.

Agreed at the end of the day, BO result is what counts but to say that a film is good just cause of BO status is not completely justified. I mean in our country even the weirdest of films become superhit, remember Ramgardh Ke Sholay. ;)

Ravindra : Your liking for Mr. Oberoi is enough justification for your comment. :)

Sakshi : Ya, that’s what my point is. I said

BO records are not the true yard-stick for judging any movie.”

That’s the only point we r agreeing upon.
And I agree with Ravindra’s point that

SAL I feel will sail through due to its hype, whatever its flaws may be.

Personally, I hate Vivek Oberoi. Maybe ‘coz my X-GF is her die-hard fan. I wonder how can anybody like that ‘Chiki Bandar’.

I had watched the original version of Zinda, the korean movie Old Boy. The movie was so disturbing that i had no mood to even have dinner that night. Old Boy was about incest. Look at the copy that Sanjay Gupta made. I was rolling in the aisle laughing while watching Zinda.

I dunno if anyone remembers, but Sanjay Gupta once made a movie called Hamesha starring Kajol and Saif. I still believe, that is probably his only OK movie along with Aatish.

Both were copies. Still….

Full2njoy – :D Hamesha! I only remember one thing about that movie – Kajol is acting full on and the scene is very tense, I think Aditya Panscholi’s mooch was coming to get them – and Saif says: “Rani” in the most squeaky tone I ever heard! the entire theatre started laughing. So glad his voice matured. (a little at least)

“Now this one is a cracker of a box office performance! Could one have ever imagined that a hardcore action film with a realistic theme and carrying a city-centric title would break records across the country at number of places and place itself into the Top-10 list of all time first week box office earners? Well, SHOOT OUT AT LOKHANDWALA has done the impossible as it has collected as much as 18.5 crores in the first week to get itself a HIT tag right away! The film had a massive first week and even though there is an expected fall in second week, it is but obvious considering the fact that huge number of prints in circulation meant horde of audience having a dekko at the film in first week itself.

The film saw 4.25 crores coming from Mumbai but this was not the only place from which the film earned its moolah! Ahmedabad was superb too with close to 1 crore coming in while Delhi was good at 1.5 crores with NCR contributing further 70 lakhs.

Sanjay Dutt has proved his power at the box office once again while shifting from a usual gangster role to a tough cop. Vivek Oberoi has found a well deserved success for himself and should choose his projects with a close eye from here on. Apoorva Lakhia now has a big success under his belt and he has to thank his producer Sanjay Gupta for entrusting him with his responsibility and ensuring a massive promotional campaign to get the film number of eyeballs.”
