Big Daddy Gere’s Bollywood Kiss

So an angreezi hero sweeps our desi heroine off her feet (literally) and plants a chummi on her soft cheek, ekdum Bollywood ishstyle.

While watching the footage of Richard Gere and Shilpa Shetty’s kissing episode, the very first thought that came to me was “Gere ki toh waat lagi”. And as predicted (Ya! I am getting better at this), members of the Shilpa Shetty Fan Club, Activists of the Vande Mataram Sangharsh Samiti and but ofcourse the ever-ready brigade, Shiv Sena have began their “anti-Gere” rally in Varanasi, Indore and Mumbai city.

Rediff News Reports:

Members of the Shilpa Shetty Fan Club took to the streets raising anti-Gere slogans. They later burnt an effigy of the actor demanding that Gere either apologise for his indecent conduct or else leave the country immediately.

Activists of the Vande Mataram Sangharsh Samiti followed suit by burning Gere’s effigy near the Geeta Mandir at Godowlia.

Led by their convenor Anup Jaiswal, the activists of the organisation not only demanded that Gere leave India immediately, but also mocked Shilpa for not protesting the star’s indecent behaviour on stage.

Shiv Sena activists led by Gulshan Kapoor also set Gere’s effigy afire and demanded that he leave the country immediately.

Frankly speaking, I think these guys are just jealous of the Delhi truck drivers who were present at the ‘Seena Taan Ke’, an Aids campaign and got to watch the ‘live’ act.

On a more serious note, the reaction to this episode only putforths the double standards inherited by us Indians. I mean these assholes protesting against the Hollywood star don’t mind watching the likes of Emran Hashmis and Malika Sherawats practically licking off their co-star’s face, on the big screen but a peck on the cheek by Gere itches in their arse. Plus where the heck were these self-appointed saviors of Indian culture and Bharatiya abla naris, when that pig faced moron with greasy long hair, Mika Singh forcibly leached upon item-girl Rakhi Sawant.

And who the heck are they to ask for an apology when we don’t see Madam Shilpa Shetty complaining.

Slightly related topic: Looking at the rate at which we people keep lighting up putlas, don’t you think its time we made it our National Sport or Leisure activity. What say?

Here is the video footage of the un-holy event.

Ps….gaal peh puppie dene se Aids nahi failta hai.

Sakshi,

The first impression I got from seeing the photo - that Gere had overdosed on his viagra. I mean come on, we’ve all seen a small peck on the cheek and stuff..but this seemed more like Gere couldnt keep his mouse inside the house.

that asides, I doubt if blogging about this issue would have any effect. Because I believe your blog audience is literate and sane enough to realize its none of their F** business.

While this incident unfolded, I also stumbled upon the news story of how STar TV offices in m’bai were ransacked.

All such incidents by the ‘Rashtriya Hindu sena’, ‘Vande Mataram Sangharsh Samiti’ and the innumerable religious groups point to one fact - not only is the growing economy causing rifts between rich and poor - it is also causing conflicts between the progressive, liberal minded and the religious bigots. Earlier, it used to be only the RSS, VHP and the BJP. Now, these parent organizations have spawned so many other rabid babies - that its difficult to just keep count.

and the above two are not isolated instances. Narayan Murthy refuses to sing national anthem and they start burning his effigies. Dhoni fails to work wonders and they start chanting hate slogans. Come valentine day, and these maniacs openly challenge couples to dare to get cozy.

All these incidents lead me to wonder - at what point will the rest of the society say - thats enuf. Not wanting to get into any mess, the literates choose to ignore such incidents and keep on with our lives. Will there be a tipping point ? When will that be ?

Geez..I intended to write a comment. came away with an equivalent of a blog post :-)

The only people who would have been justified in this protest would be Richard Gere’s fan club. Gere ko aur koi mila nahi that he stooped to do this… this dis-speakable act with someone like Shilpa Shetty? Wonder if Miss Shetty’s publicist had something to do with it.

It was a double assault on Indian culture. Our bhartiya nari was kissed in public and a news channel was sheltering two lovers belonging to different faiths. But we are India shining and rising; we don’t take no assault to our culture silently; and so our brothers and sisters immediately burnt effigies of Shilpa Shetty and Richard Gere all over India and ransacked the office of Star News. Even The Economics Times didn’t cite the kiss affair as another sign of our super success, that not only have Indian men arrived on the global scene (Arun Nair), but also our women are now considered kissable by Americans.
But now that we have so many Indians traveling abroad, many foreigners coming to India, and countless global TV channels and greeting card companies; the threat to our culture is real. I doubt what have been achieved by our heroic reactionary brothers and sisters can stand to that challenge. And therefore I propose bringing some organization: to create a state funded Rapid Moral Force (RMF) to both protect our culture and promote it.
This army will employ all these agitated brothers and sisters who have so earnestly been protecting our culture. They will be deployed in all over India and their first task will be to demolish all western style toilets. Yes brothers and sisters, those commodes are the biggest assault to our culture. Let the RMF take them out one by one before they start burning down all the greeting cards. The RMF will be armed with clothes, kerosene and lighters to help them burn effigies of any person who violate our culture. They will also have clubs to ransack any institute that affronts our culture. Since they won’t have guns, the RMF will be a totally peaceful force in line with our Indian tradition of non-violence (now, when did that become a part)

Ok.. First of all, star TV office was not ransacked because of this richard gere shilpa shetty thing.. it was because Star TV was acting over-secular by defending a muslim guy who kidnapped a 16-year old (a minor !!) in Surat. Sheesh.. this is becoming so common… of course, muslims raping and abducting others is secular, while the rare other way round case (even on reel, remember Mumbai) becomes fundamentalist and fascist and bigoted and nazi and assault of secularism and the other usual buzzwords.

Next,
ek chumma samaj mein aata hai, do samjha, teen bhi samjha.. lekin idhar to foreplay chal raha tha bhai logo…. !!! Agar camera aur audience nahi hota to kapde bhi phat jaate…

>>> (even on reel, remember Mumbai)

Damn, the movie was named “Bombay” (with arvind swami and manisha koirala), not Mumbai.. Man, this name change is really confusing..

Man, some f**king Islamic journo even wrote that a guy cannot marry a muslim gal without first converting, its against the basic tenets of islam (which is perennially under attack). And in Times of India Edit page !!! Thats secularism for you..

Loved the last line “gaal peh puppie dene se Aids nahi failta hai”.. I actually saw a very ignorant comment made on IBNLive webiste where a person has actualy asked whether Shilpa & Gere wer trying to spread AIDS. You can see a complilation of some other funny comments on thi story on my site inclding one made by irrepresible Mahesh Bhatt

For a society who has been deeply damaged by colonialism can one think of a more offensive image of a white guy grabbing a daughter of India and forcing himself upon her? It is so symbolic. It is right in line with the image of the white colonist forcing himself upon a country and just taking whatever he wants.

Richard Gere should pay the ultimate price for this.

What bothers me however is those who would blame Shilpa Shetty for this.

Too often women victims of rape in India are blamed for what happened like they wanted the rape to happen or it was their fault the rape happened even when the truth might be that the rapists brutalized them and they couldn’t stop the rape from happening.

While of course Richard Gere didn’t actually rape Shilpa Shetty, I still see this whole “Blame the Woman Victim” dynamic in place. From what I saw from the video Shilpa Shetty did nothing to cause Richard Gere to act the way he did, and was in fact as shocked as everyone else was that he would act in such a disgraceful manner.

We need to defend this daughter of India, not blame her for this white man’s assault upon her.

I am very sad and shocked to see protests over kissing issue in present India. There is nothing wrong with kissing on cheek or lip. Stop protest and grow up. Be educated and be wise. Are we in the year 1800? come on! We are in the modern century. Please do not blame Shilpa and Gere over kiss because it is not a big deal. Don’t forget that Shilpa and Gere came to India to help people understand how AIDS is dangerous and tell everyone to use condom. Also, Gere came to help India grow economically because he loves India and he is a frequent traveller. Don’t forget that. They are not bad people. I am surprised to hear that kissing issue was spreaded all over news and media. Very Sad! Kissing on cheek is nothing. I hope everyone should stop non-sense protests. It is not worthy! I am glad to know fact that most people in the world said that it shouldn’t be a big deal.

So please dont fight. It is not worthy! DO NOT DROP OUT OF SCHOOL. JUST STAY IN SCHOOL, BE EDUCATED, and SAY ‘NO’ TO DRUGS AND TERRORISM. STAY UNITED. I mean YOU! GOD BLESS YOU!

Shadow:

If you know a few days before the incident of that ”innocent minor girl who was kidnapped by a muslim boy” [as per you],there was also a case where there was a minor muslim girl and a hindu guy .General public supported the lovers even then. Both the situations are same. But in that case will you say that the guy “kidnapped” the girl just like you did in the case where the guy was a muslim?I am sure you will not.I have problem with none of the cases, its their personal matter but i guess for you its ok only when the guy is a hindu, right?Thats definitely not fair

Here i agree with Sakshi on one thing which also came to my mind almost immediately when i saw this Shilpa-Richard news and that was about Rakhi. Rakhi complained and nothing happened, in this case Shilpa is even not complaining because she understands the situation then why are some people so keen to get her justice? Its again a personal matter and i would have been completely with Shilpa if she would have then decided to complain

also SHADOW:
there are narrow minded people in every religion.
When you give an example of the movie Bombay saying some people protested, do you know there were similar protests against the movie Fire[Shabana Azmi, Nandita das] The argument was that why none of the ‘characters’ was a muslim. To be honest it never struck me until this was pointed out by those fanatics because if you watch movies you must be knowing that most, infact almost all movies[except for a very few] do not have a muslim character as a lead.

Its Shilpa’s problem whether to complain or not. Being a gal myself i would support her in either of the decisions. She has chosen not to complain because she didnt find it offensive and so we should be ok with it.

Yes i know that too. Light i think you are talking about the protests by Shiv Sainiks after the release of the movie ‘Fire’. Only way out is dont listen to any fanatic/radical groups irrespective of their religions.
