Technically speaking there is actually nothing much to review in a film like Namastey London. It’s your typical Bollywoodish romantic film, with typical story line and very typical characters. So if you are not a watcher of so called “masala films†then this one is definitely not for you.
Now I love watching films and will go any lengths to watch anything for the sake of watching a films – and so Saturday night was wasted spent over a film filled with script irregularities, directorial flaws, bucket loads of PJs and last but not the least ancient notions on apna Swades and paraya Inglaaand. But then again this is Bollywood and people here will try to cash in on anything, so sensibilities can go to hell.
Expecting nothing to be gained, I watched the film and exactly the same way I walked out after (an easily avoidable experience by many) two and half hours of screen time.
But to be absolutely fair not everything was that bad and I feel credit should be given to those who deserve it and so, two people who totally rocked in this sidey-affair were surprisingly the ones from whom one wouldn’t expect much from.
Rishi Kapoor : He is completely hilarious in the role of Manmohan Singh, a father who is appalled with his daughter Jasmeet uff Jazz and her adoption of British identity. His irritated expressions on seeing his daughter turning down proposals from desi-mundas, wacky quarrels with his wife, him hogging on shud-ghee and teasing his angreez-daamad (to be) to the core – Rishi is a total cutie pie. I really hope to see him in more such roles.
And….
Katrina Kaif: Now is this woman HOT or what!! As most of you know I am a big Salman Khan fan but watching this woman on the screen I couldn’t help but agree that Sallu baba is one lucky man to have someone as gorgeous and sexy as Ms. Kaif. She fits the character of Jazz to the very last Zzzzz. And besides winning the crown for Ms. Hotness, she has managed to act decently well too. Her chemistry with leading hero is amazing and her struggle between two identities is very well portrayed.
As for others – Akshay Kumar has done an okay job but it seems old age is catching up on him. Upen Patel will be missed by you as he was in the film, Nina Wadia is good as Mrs. Singh but a woman of her talent is so bloody wasted here. Clive Standon as Jazz’s Brit-boyfriend looks good but totally sucks as an actor.
And lastly, director Vipul Shah stands to make better films when the screenplays are lifted from other sources, so I think he should stick to that funda rather than indulging in worth-less experiments.
