Zodiac: The Quest for the Unknown

*Paaji is undoubtly one of the coolest sardarjis I have known till date. I am happy to present his thoughts and rants, to you guys. So be good my people.

Sameer and his wife were gifted with a new born baby. Their parents called up the family panditji to make the new baby boys janam patri. He was a Leo by birth date, people who are said to be born leaders. The panditji said this boy would bring good luck to the whole family, would be very successful and lucky in life.

Ramesh’s parents were finding a suitable girl for their only son. He was a post graduate and working in US for a software company. They saw quite a few girls, but the panditji said that he was a manglik by his birth date and time. He had to get married to a manglik girl only. That too, the manglik power in his janam patri was very strong. So the girl had to be one who would counter this. Finally they found one, after a year of deliberation and reading daily news paper matrimonials.

Ranjit was not doing well in studies. He had written many exams after 12th, but couldn’t clear any of them. He couldn’t decide which stream to go into, medicine or engineering. His parents were very worried about him. Then an astrologer told them that he would go abroad for further studies. A change of place was on his cards, and this would happen in the coming few months only. Ranjit started convincing his parents to send him to Australia for graduation. Finally, when nothing could materialize in India, his parents took a loan and sent him to Australia for his engineering.

Shalini’s parents were very worried about her. She had a very short temper and used to get angry on petty things. Even her friends had complained about her short temper to her teacher and parents. They couldn’t find a solution to it, and finally went to an astrologer, who suggested them to get her a special stone, which would sooth her stars and keep her temper in control.

All these are real life events we keep hearing about. All these are so common that we hardly give any importance to them. Parents visiting astrologers to know what would happen to their son’s career or daughter’s marriage is so common that we don’t even give a damn to these things.

All these janam patri’s and zodiac signs are based on the planets and their positions for a particular sign. Planetary movements are said to influence different zodiac signs in different ways. All these movements and positions are used to find out the happenings and an event of the future, something which is not known to man, some thing which man wants to know, and feels helpless since he doesn’t know.

Every one of us is very sensitive and selfish. When good things are happening, when we are happy and satisfied, we never complain for any thing. It’s only when things go wrong, when life doesn’t take the way we want it to that we start to feel desperate and irritated. It’s when we cannot answer the questions arising in our mind and all our efforts go in vain that we start our quest to find the unknown. We feel so helpless and weak that we desperately want to seek what is in store for us, and what would happen in future to us.

It’s this time in our life that we start believing in the lines in our hands more than we have ever done in our lives before. It is this time in our life that we start believing that planets thousands of kilometers away would be affecting our lives more than our will power and perseverance. Numbers start to make sense in numerology and sequence of tarot cards starts telling us things we always wanted to know.

This is the quest of man to know the unknown. I could never understand how these planets could ever have a affect on our lives, neither could I understand the meaning of the lines on our hands. But the truth from ancient ages holds good. That man has always wanted to know what is hidden from him, some thing which he doesn’t know, some thing which only time can tell and reveal in its full form. We still believe and would always believe in affect which planets and their gravitational pull have on us.

And our parents would keep matching janam patri’s for a good and suitable spouse for us.

>> I could never understand how these planets could ever have a affect on our lives, neither could I understand the meaning of the lines on our hands.

The rationale given is that sun, moon and other heavenly bodies exert gravity on the oceans of Earth causing tides. We live on earth, our body is also 70% water…so it shud affect us too! Well, thats what educated astrologers believe. But scientists believe its not true and gravitational force cannot affect our bodily fluids as it is weak and negligible in comparison to local internal forces. In essence, it plays no role on affecting our moods.

Look at your palm, right now. There are dark lines and lighter lines. Notice that you will be able to bend your fingers and fold your palm at exactly these lines! Now bend your wrist. It bends exactly at the few bold lines running across at the base of your wrist. Look at your feet. Look at your armpits. There are lines everywhere. More importantly, these are lines at exactly those locations where things bend. They are more prominent at those locations where they bend frequently. Lines in your palm have no special meaning attached to it! Have you looked at the hand of a gorilla or other apes? Even they have lines on their palms. Lets ask the astrologers to explain all this. Sometimes, I feel Astrology is nothing but an insult to science!

I guess it’s alright as long as people are finding some solace init and not taking everything too seriously. As adults we should be able to pick the good from the not-so-good…right? :)

Good post Paaji….you surely do sound like my mum too. ;)

Mitesh,
Once on a show on Animal planet, they showed how moon has been affecting life on earth right from the time life began on earth. Even microbes are affected. There are some birds that breed on every 12th full moon day only. The moon affects the reproduction patterns of many a species. Even the life of many species is governed by the moon, eg migration, behaviour, etc. They went on to say that if moon were not there, there might not have been life on earth at all. And then , moon has influenced evolution. The moon tides were a major cause of evolution of marine life to terrestrial life (when the marine animals were thrown ashore by tides, and some species adapted to breathe air for survival).

Now, I am not anti or pro astrology as such, but you just reminded me of that wonderful show. I stayed up till 2 am to watch it, even though I had office the next day !

Shadows,
What you saw is true. Moon has played a critical role by bringing life from oceans to land, thus playing a part in our evolution. But what I am saying is this in no way determines how much money you would make in life, whether your marriage will be successful, whether you will succeed in the exams blah blah…

Well i am quite surprised with the comments i got, and i feel all of us feel that these planetary movements and lines of our hands can in no was affect our lives. But i still feel all of us must be reading our horoscope in the daily newspaper or in Sunday Times, and at one point in time or the other must have shown our hand to some astrologer. This is just to know out of sheer curiosity as to what is in store for us. This is natural on our part to know what is hidden from us. And this is what i call The Quest for the Known

Well, I am a very strong believer is stars, planets and everything associated with it. Gurpal has brought out very nicely how we Indians tend to associate all the happenings in our life with the inter-planetary movements. He has enriched it with the different examples to emphasise the importance of astrology in the Indian society. Kudos to Gurpal for providing us with a clear insight.
