Dilwale Dulha Le Jayega

Just the other while driving my cousin sister to the airport for no apparent reason we started a discussion on wedding songs – a song played in the background while we walk to the gallows mandap. You know that “one” perfect song which would do justice to our emotions and mellow down our anxiety fits.

Since both of us have already crossed the appropriate marriageable threshold set at per North Indian standards, we have decided to move over to marriage matters and narrow down our choices – I mean dulha aaj nahi toh kal milhe jayega. Right na? (Okay, now stop giving that “she’s gone bonkers” kinda-looks, this is serious stuff dude).

So she started off with naming a few English numbers like – Shania Twain’s “You’re Still the One”, Whitney Houston’s “I will always love you”, Celine Dion’s “My heart will go on”, Bryan Adams’s “Heaven” and a couple more here and there. From the Bollywood lot, she could only think of “Chal Chale Apane Ghar” from the film Woh Lamhe and “Tumhi Dekho Na” from the film Kabhi Alvida Na Kehna.

Then it was my turn. Now I am not exactly the mushy kinds, so senti-rona dhona types don’t always work for me. So I really had to think hard here; flashback thru my Bollywood dairies, think about those ever-green eighties and nineties angreezi tracks. I even considered some of those melodious ghazals from the likes of Jagjit Singh and Pankaj Udadas but nothing was fitting right. I mean since we all are expected to walk down the aisle just once in our lives (though I think 2 should be a norm now), I want it to be zaara hatke as in something that will set a record history books.

Merawala White Horse

And then with a flash of lighting or switch of radio frequency (as in this case), I heard it. I found my wedding song. Yes! People I have a wedding song and by giving it some more thought over past few days…I have planned the whole thing out.

Just like in film “Biwi Ho Toh Aisi” starring Rekha and Farooq Shaikh, I will make a grand entrance by arriving in a completely decorated Nirma jaisi safedi wala white horse with the whole band-baaja and the fireworks. All the baraties mostly comprising of totally talli Punjabis will be dancing on the tunes of the bandwallas….who will be stroking nothing else but the tunes of my wedding song, which will go something like this.

hey ya… hey ya…

hey ya heeriye sehra baandh ke main toh aaya re

hey ya doli baarat bhi saath mein main toh laaya re

hey ya heeriye sehra baandh ke main toh aaya re

hey ya doli baarat bhi saath mein main toh laaya re

Talli Punjabi Baraties

ab toh na hota hai ek roz intezaar

soni aaj nahi toh kal hai tujhko toh bas meri honi re

tenu leke main javanga, dil deke main javanga

tenu leke main javanga, dil deke main javanga

hey ya… hey ya…

aa keh de zamane se, tu mere ishq ki hai daastaan

hey ya… hey ya…

o jaaniya keh de bahaane se

main tera jism hoon, tu meri jaan

kuch na chupa

mushkilon se milta hai aisa sona pyar

soni cheez tere jaisi na mujhko na mujhko khoni re

tenu leke main javanga, dil deke main javana

tenu leke main javanga, dil deke main javana (Film : Salaam-E-Ishq)

Hopefully this wouldn’t land me up at the divorce court nor confine my going-to-be saasumaa to the hospital bed.

What say you – ekdum jhakas an!
