Doordarshan News Anchors Vs. The Modern Day Newscasters

If like me, you too miss the old good Doordarshan days when television was so much more meaningful then you have to read a post written by a good pal of mine – Abzee.

Hope those at the right positions are listening and taking some notes.

He writes -

Does anyone remember the stiff, propah-English speaking news anchors who maintained faces so blank, a poker-play would give anything for! Yet, their impassive and impersonal act of news-reading, on retrospect, is the best approach to the job/duty than the impassionate, highly personal and uninhibitedly theatrical modern day newscasters.

Luku Sanyal, Dolly Thakore, Sarla Maheshwari, Tejeshwar Singh?they were some of the early news anchors; back when the concept of Breaking News and Exclusive Info were unheard of.

>> but compared to the collared yes-men of capitalist despots, I find the old self-effacing style much more altruistic in the bigger picture.

Capitalist Despots ?? If Abzee would note, most of the private channels are actually communist-marxist dominated. Eg. IBN, NDTV, Star News, etc.
The best channel around, IMHO, is CNBC (both Awaaz and the main channel). Good that the TV18 guys had the sense to keep someone like Rajdeep Sardesai away from them, and restrict them to only IBN.

DD is still real good, The so-called modern news channels are nothing but what’s called Papparazi or the like , DD may not be giving kitchen secrets of Nethas but for an average rural Indian, DD provides all the news , Well it may not be entertaining and noisy like private yellow journalists, But DD-news is real good , I have always preffered DD for news and other programs , It is something I could always safely let my child watch.

DD News remains the balanced matter-of-fact news, a nerration free of theatrical and often illogical opinions of the anchors. Neither it indulge in creating sensation, nor it wastes time on discussing petty behaviour and comments of bollywood celebreties, sportpersons and of course politicians. These are its strength. DD news gives bare facts for the views to interpret and form their own opinion. It does not indulges in news priming. That should not be prime onjective of news as is the case with scores of news channels. That such a fare fails to sell is a different matter.
