Bigg Boss Climax - Rakhi Sawant Must Win

Shivam Vij links to an article by C P Surendran on the now passe Big Brother-Shilpa Shetty racism episode. In my opinion Mr. Surendran has hit the nail on the right spot.

He writes:

So why is most of India in mourning? Because, Tweed and Goody called her a few names one reportedly called her a Paki, the other, according to Germain Greer in The Guardian, compared her to a critical part of the female anatomy, which was bleeped out which Shilpa considered racist.

At home, millions of ethically evolved Indians are watching Big Boss, an Indian reality show comparable to Celebrity Big Brother in which a Bollywood starlet Rakhi Sawant is similarly being given short shrift by her visibly upper class co-contestants.

As one of them said, “Aap ooper se niche tak nakli natak ho.” And there goes Rakhi Sawant, yet again sobbing, flaunting her all, to the confession chamber. Moments later she tells the camera, much as Shilpa did, “Why does every one hate me?”

On closer look, the friction between Rakhi Sawant and the Rest boils down to a class and cultural conflict between people who can speak English and an item girl who can’t.

As one of the participants in the Celebrity Big Brother said of Shilpa: “Shilpa should ***off home. She can’t even speak English.” Cut to Big Boss, and you will see housemates repeatedly making personal remarks and bitching about Rakhi’s “upbringing and outfits.”

And today Mid-Day has a report stating around 1,200 Rakhi Sawant fans have filed an online petition against Sony Television, protesting Rakhi’s character assassination by co-contestants in the Bigg Boss house. The culprits this time round are Carol Gracias, Ravi Kissen and Amit Sadh.

Obviously Rakhi’s fans are following similar pattern to what happened between Ofcom and Big Brother but I doubt that Ms. Sawant’s supporters would top or even get close to the number of people who turned out for Bollywood siren Shilpa Shetty’s support. The reasons could be many - Rakhi is after all an item gal and it’s a perceived notion that item gals are sluts & whores basically everything derogatory, she comes from you a lower-middle class family, her loudmouth and boldness has often been laughed at by the media, it is happening on a desi-show and not across borders, etc.

Forget Bigg Boss, recently when Mr. Mika (who appears to think more from the lower portion of his body) released a lewd music video over the kissing controversy involving himself and Rakhi Sawant, nobody objected. Not a single person belonging to our ethically evolved society filed a lawsuit. Even those men, the self nominated authority of moral policing who found Hrithik-Ash kissing scene objectionable and Malika Sherawat’s dance stint to be against Indian values, sat at home with a fat tape on their mouth.

Not saying that what Rakhi Sawant’s fans are doing is the correct approach, I don’t think that at all. I mean after all it is a game-show which is designed to bring out the worst in people and then again who knows it might even be rigged. And not to forget each of the participant including Rakhi are being paid well enough for their misery within the Bigg Boss house.

Since this is the final week of the show, I would say if you really want to show your support then vote for other contestants for eviction and thereby Rakhi remains in the house till the very end - This is what I am doing.

According to me Rakhi should win not because she has been a victim of class division but simply because she has been a complete performer thru it all. Be it her bitching, PJs, sucking up, over-enthusiasm while performing tasks, confession room dramas and not to forget awesome in-between dance jigs.

She made watching Bigg Boss one hour of hilarious entertainment, where could expect the unexpected from her. No wonder the show’s TRP dropped considerably when she was evicted and the show producers had to get her back on as wild card entry inorder to save their butts.

Example - A Conversation between Sawant and Kashmira Shah.

Kash : Tumko kya lagta hai humhe show par phir kyun bulaya?

Sawant : Haan re! Kyun ki hum bindass hai.

Kash : Nahi…Kyun bulaya?

Sawant : Hum frank log hai.

Kash : Nahi….Tu sooch.

Sawant : Kyunki hum band bajaooo types hai.

So yeah - chuck the dharna, screw the online petition and just vote for the enemy, it’s really that simple.

Ps….On a side note, if Sawant wins Bigg Boss I shall be throwing a big paaarty in her honor. This is an attempt to tempt those who don’t watch the show and/or are member of Anti-Sawant gang to get on the other side of the turf. You can do so by sending a SMS on 2525 and punching in Ravi or Rahul or Carol in the text area.

Class divide ? CP Surendran thinks with the “posterior” lower part of his body, it seems. He writes on the editorial page of Times, doesnt he?
Carol Gracias, Ravi Kishan and Amit Sadh all look as lower class as Rakhi Sawant(if Rakhi is).

And yeah, I still aint watching that crappy show :) I watched it once, and I was bored within 5 minutes.

Shadows - Why ain’t suprise with your comment. ;)

Frankly I don’t know much about Mr. Surendran but I thought his points on Big Brother row made sense. As for the three culprits I would say Ravi Kissen is the one that stinks the most. And with regards to you not watching, well I am just happy to know that you won’t be voting for Rakhi either. :)

I don’t agree with CP at all.

From what I’ve seen, the issue was that Rakhi actually went to Ravi’s house and told Ravi’s wife that Ravi and Carol were having an affair. And something similar for Amit (can’t remember what). This was revealed by Kash (as her revenge on Rakhi for being evicted) to all the other members. That was the reason, plain and simple.

So obviously everyone (Amit, Ravi, Rahul and Carol) ganged up on her on the plank that “first don’t lie, and second don’t take this stuff to our house”. I’m sure that this would have been the same treatment meted out to any other participant in the house, irrespective of their economic background. I refuse to believe that this is a rascism or discrimination issue.

I mean have we forgotten what Ravi had to say about Amit (chota TV serial ka actor), Rahul (flop star), Aryan ? He’s always played himself out to be superior to all of them because of the UP and Bihar angle. And I don’t even want to get into the rivalries between the women…

And if Rakhi Sawant is an item girl, what is Kash ? surely not Meryl Streep ? we’ve all suddenly forgotten her sleazoid stuff ?

Sakshi - I’m with you on your support for Rakhi to win the game. But, at the same time I’m also stuck between both Rahul and Ravi- simply because they’ve played the game so damn well, as against Rakhi’s hazaar manipulations, etc. Anyways, all revealed this weekend….

FINALLY…thanks for blogging about this issue. i wanted to blog about it too but lazy genes at work here :) my two bit contribution for this cause was to sign on the petition for rakhi sawant.

i definitely want rakhi to win…coz she showed grace under fire and admitted to having said whatever was accused of her by kash. anyone else would have definitely denied it or passed the buck on to someone else. and hey, she’s the youngest of all the contestants so ganging up against her was a cruel thing to do. poor thing…it’s really not her fault that she can’t speak fluent english like the black skeleton carol :)

Sakshi,

The comparisons made between Rakhi and Shilpa are incorrect. Rakhi was not called a cunt, or that she eats with her hands etc etc.

Rakhi Sawant is basically irritating. The way she tries to portray that she is soooosexy and god’s gift to mankind Uggghhh. I am really surprised as to how a person like you could like her.

But I agree Big boss is entirely fixed now. Seems Sony guys now want Rakhi to win I dunno why?

Sakshi,

I aint voting for anyone.. I dont wanna spend Rs 3 for SMS on some stupid show :)

Also, Frankly, looking back, I dont know much about Amit Sadh, but surely, I have seen a lot of Ravi Kishan and Carol Gracias. I wonder what makes them think that they are of a higher class than Rakhi. Atleast Ravi should know that he is Bhojpuri (*guffaws. Think vulgarity) star, while Rakhi is more well known than him.

If they had real class, they would not be on that show in the first place. (Think Amitabh or Abhishek on Big Boss. )
