Shilpa, You Need To Step It Up.

So it’s all over the news be it National or International, our Bollywood siren Ms. Shilpa Shetty has been subjected to immense agony, jealousy and above all racism by few of her Big Brother housemates.

HT Reports:

Asian and British viewers have flooded Channel 4, which airs the show, and British media regulator Ofcom, with complaints. Till late on Tuesday, 4,500 complaints had been received. “We’ll look into each complaint,” said an Ofcom spokesperson. The watchdog has asked for unedited tapes of the show.

The villains of the reality show are to be the trio of three bitches – Non celebrity Big Brother winner Jade Goody, model Danielle Lloyd and singer-actress Jo O’Meara.

Many viewers think Shilpa is being targeted out of jealousy: she is being paid more – $680,000 (Rs 3.5 crore) as against the standard fee of $610,000 (Rs 3 crore) – than anyone else. She has also been more popular in the media than other participants, mostly B- and C-list celebs.

Here are some of the reasons behind viewer’s fury.

“Goody’s mother Jackiey (who has now been evicted) started calling Shilpa ‘Sipla’, then, sarcastically, ‘princess’ and finally, ‘the Indian’,” hotelier Girish Sanger told HT. “When Shilpa cooked chicken, Lloyd refused it, saying it was overcooked and that was why Indians were thin and sickly. She said, ‘How do Indians eat with their fingers? One doesn’t know where their fingers have been’,” Sanger said.

The Guardian quoted Lloyd as having said of Shilpa, “She is a dog,” and Goody as, “She makes me feel sick. She makes my skin crawl.” The daily said that on Monday’s show, “Shetty (had) ended up in tears”.

Some also accuse Jack Tweed (Jade’s boyfriend) of calling Shilpa a “Paki” during one of their fights and the trio also mocked her for bleaching her facial hair. In response, Channel 4 which airs the show has confirmed that Jack Tweed called fellow housemate Shilpa Shetty a “cunt”, not a “Paki” but assured viewers that no racial abuse would be tolerated and Big Brother would be monitoring each contestant and will take appropriate action against the guilty.

Now if you ask me, I sincerely think that the whole matter is being blown out of proportion here. What is been happening there can be described in simple terms like “Bitch fight” or “Cat fight”, depending on whatever breed one may fancy. Issues of Racism have been so much talked about that people today have become overly sensitive and therefore see irrelevant/minor incidents as major catastrophes.

Agreed they have made fun of her Indian accent and habits but haven’t we seen the same done by others on television before Big Brother. Shows like “Goodness Gracious Me”, “Kumars at No. 44″ found their success because of very same act. Or is there a rule that allows only Indians to make fun of other Indians?

There is no doubt that Shilpa is being bullied by those dumb fucks but for crying out loud she is 30+ practically double their age (mentally as well), she simply needs to stand up for herself rather than shedding tears or taking pep talk from the ex-Jackson 5 member – its really that simple.

Plus there have been instances where our dearest lady has herself given opportunities to those rats to chabber bullshit about her. I mean if you don’t like someone or you know the other person doesn’t like you, then why go and rub your face in theirs; just stay out of their business. If they don’t like her cooking then ask them to cook for themselves, no one has asked her to be extra nice. Inspite of her distance people still continue to bother her than she should fucking hell kick their lame butts – Screw the house rules, screw the viewers, screw the whole Sati Savatri crap, your self-respect needs to come up first.

But then again there could be a whole different dimension to Shilpa’s story. Maybe she is taking all this non-sense in order to gain sympathy votes from the remaining contestants and the viewers. After all they are in there only to win the final loot, aren’t they?

Anyways whatever maybe the reason, racism or not, girly fight or not – one thing is for sure that now our Shilpa is very much in the running for being the winner of Celebrity Big Brother. And if she does win, bloody hell she should be awarded with this year’s Film Fare award for Best Actress as well.

See this video and decide for yourself.

All i can say is i agree totally… Shilpa needs to buck up and dish the dirt, if they call her “indian” or “paki”, she should turn round and say, “white”, “black”… i mean come on…. if she claims to be a strong independent woman then bloody show it … than cry behind those massive sunglasses…. playin an emotional wreck… SHE IS AN ACTRESS SHE SHOULD BE ABLE TO IGNORE IT!!!! She is being bullied… there is no racism… all we are seeing is just your typical girl bitchness …. simple as … its nothing new.. we all have seen it, even done it… and why are people being so touchy about her being called “indian”… i mean i have multi cultural friends due to living in the UK, and if i have to descrive someone, or forget someone’s name, we say “white”, “black”, “chinese” …. also… whats with the accent teasing??? how often is it that chinese ppl get teased with their accent… in india south indians are mimmicked… what about in the uk fuckin irish and the scottish ppl get teased coz of their accents!!.. Also, what about all the teasing that is done to sardars in india??? surely isnt that racism… abuse to the religion of sikhism??? the whole thind with shilpa is blown out of proportion just coz an indian actress is on british ground… and to also point out… in the uk every year in BB or celebrity BB someone is always a victim to bitchyness… its just this time … its Shilpa’s turn… unfortunately… and why her??? well thats sods law!! people and governments have too much time to waste and discuss issues like this!! india should sort out the poverty situation than worry about shilpa’s reputation… and th UK has its own bloody problems!!!! thats my rant done on the matter…. :D and girl bitchyness will never stop… somehow we are just born with it!! just got to wait to see who is the victim on the next big brother…..

Sakshi: Was wondering when you were going to be writing a post on the latest news about Shilpa and here it is.:)

My two cents-
Completely agree with you that the issue of racism has become so sensitive in society today and is very loosely used such that many a time is blown out of proportion. At first, when I saw the news about this, I thought it was simply to gain some publicity and get more viewers tuned into watching the Show. Then later on I thought it was merely cause the other house mates wanted to stoop to any level/tactics to probably get Shilpa out of the house, all in the name of the game.
Perhaps, they might have used many strong words and sometimes passed on some racist remarks against Shilpa. But, her crying in my personal opinion can either be seen as her acting like a ‘cry’baby since I reckon she is a big girl to deal with such things. But on the other hand maybe she felt alone and vulnerable in the house. Whatever is the truth nodbody really knows. But I am assured of one thing and that this incident is being taken seriously by the Indian Government and has also made Shilpa a known celeberity in the UK as well, so she’s becoming globablly known..thanks to the Show. Perhaps, that is what she wanted.
I agree that racism/discrimination exists in India where there is a fine line between the North Indians and the South Indians or anyone for that matter. But, that’s wrong too and should be dealt with as well. And because Shilpa is a Citizen of India doing a show abroad, it is good to see her country’s government standing up for her.

Well different people different views. At the end of it all “It’s Just A Game”, show your support by voting others out…it’s that simple. ;)

I want to say i agree with Nikiita to a point

I have watched the show from the start and i am still waiting to see this racism atacks? What you have to realise is the British press will do anything to ruin someones life and it looks like its Jades turn, Yes she and Shilpa have clashed from day one, but that just means they don’t get on, nothing more and nothing less, What you need to realise is here in the UK Shilpa is not the goddess she is in India, a lot of us had never even heard of her, and she has come in to the house and demands she is treated as she would be in India, She needs to realise she is in the UK and our cultures are completley different! She wants everyone to love her, but in the real world that does not happen and from what Shilpa has told the other house mates she doesnt live in the real world, she has a shelterd life, you could even say an unreal life!

Shilpa is a grown Woman not a child, she needs to stop acting like my 4 year old daughter and stop playing the victim! or Maybe that was her plan from day one, as anyone who goes on Big Brother has a plan, they all want fame in the UK, if this is her plan it is working, but i feel it could back fire on her as no one would want to work with someone who cries to get her own way!

I wonder if the people of India know about her flirting with a 61 year old man on the show? or do the people of India know about her use of foul languge on the show? I dont think so because that does not portray her as a victim!

I have to say i am neither a Shipla or Jade fan, but someone who is loving watching this show

Well well Rebecca,

Would you be offended if I call you a whitewashed ghostface !! No offence meant, its just that everyone has blood on their hands. Just best to avoid such comments.

It requires sense, even to be a good racist. Being able to notice skin colour isnt just enough. See how Britain has become one of the biggest sources of terrorist finance and terror capitals across the world.

BTW, is Jades or whoever she is, is she really really dumb? Did she not understand that the show is being recorded, every comment of theirs will be recorded and beamed to TVs across countries.

I DON’T AGREE!! Having been born and brought up in England, I have had to deal with the exact same racist taunts that Shilpa has had to deal with. It’s the same stuff that my parents had to deal with when they came over in the late 70’s and every other asian and their parents that I know.

Of course it is racism. The asian ethic is to take the ’shit’, deal with it and make yourself a better person from it which is exactly what she is doing. But it doesn’t detract from the fact that it is racism.

These people are supposed to be celebrities. They should represent their backgrounds and I’m afraid the three girls are doing exactly that.

I’d like to think that people aren’t racist but this place hasn’t changed and CBB has sadly confirmed it, just cos they don’t say it to your face any more doesn’t mean they don’t say it in the security of their own homes.

Hi
I saw your blog mentioned in a aol article on what Indian bloggers think about the whole situation in Celebrity Big Brother.
I totally agree with what you are saying and it angers me as well that people wont admit this is racism.
Me and my husband who is of Bangladeshi origin where huge Big Brother fan’s before this but this has totally changed are minds.
Normally in big brother if a situation occurs where one housemate is being aggressive to another big brother immediately call’s the one who started it to the diary room to cool of.
The other night when they had that huge argument over the stock cube Jade came over very aggressive to the point I actually thought she was going to hit Shilpa and nothing happened Big Brother didn’t call Jade to the diary room when other housemates have been called in the past for a lot worse even on one occasion one girl was booted of big brother but why not this time.
I read a post on the big brother community on Livejournal that apparently since Jade Goody left the big brother house first time round she has the same management as Davina the host maybe this is why nothing is being done I don’t know I am just so shocked them bitches are still in the house.
I think Shilpa is dealing with it all amazingly and I don’t think she’s playing for the sympathy vote or the money really because she is a big star she already has loads of money I think she just doesn’t want to lower herself to Jade’s level and I respect her even more for this.
Rebecca~ Liverpool~ UK – I don’t think she is behaving like a 4 year old at all the other girls are behaving like 4 year old’s actually that’s an insult to 4 year old’s they behave far worse then any 4 year old and about her wanting fame in the UK thats a joke go and look Shilpa Shetty up on google or Wikipedia she is a huge star already and is lived and known by million’s already in the UK even before Big Brother.
She was in the film Baazigar which was the first Bollywood film I ever saw and started my love and obsession with Bollywood and to this day remains one of my all time favourites.
Like loads of other people I filed a complaint to Ofcom but it look’s like nothing is going to be done its all ridiculous really and I am really excited for tomorow’s eviction the look on Jade’s face when she realises she is hated by million’s all over the world is going to be priceless like someone said the other day the program that made Jade Goody is going to break her and damn right to.
If anyone wants to chat about the whole thing my email is sarah555666@gmail.com or I posted the link to my Livejournal blog above.

>> trust me there is more discrimination in India than in the UK

OK Dave, there is, but how do you define more. Whats your yardstick?
The fact that more than 15 languages are spoken in India, and we get along pretty well, compared to Britain, which seems unable to integrate even 5 other communities.

Yes, there is discrimination against us in India. I say, I am a victim. Muslims have more rights than Hindus in India (it may seem strange, but thats how it is … in the name of liberalism and secularism). Now I see Britain going down the same appeasement path as India, and soon you gotta have a Kashmir on your hands.

The intensity of racism is much much less in India as compared to Britain. In fact, they say, even Germany and France are a lot less racist than Britain, contrary to perceptions.

I can’t believe people are talking about this show as if it’s a microcosm of the real world. It’s not. It’s a bunch of B-list celebrities (Shilpa might be famous in India, but no-one I know has heard of her before) being couped up in an unnatural situation and throwing dirt around at each other. Their actions are not going to be in keeping with how they’d be in the real world, so trying to enforce real world standards on them is pointless.

It’s a big media and celebrity circle jerk that’s put on as theatre.. just see this as Shilpa playing a heroine in yet another movie and Jade playing the baddie. When they get out it’ll be all smiles.

I want to understand why anyone bothers to do this. Perhaps you could fill me in? I have an “Off” button on my TV and if I don’t like what is being shown, I can turn it off. I don’t like people smoking either, but I don’t write to the government about it.

Well well Rebecca,

Would you be offended if I call you a whitewashed ghostface !! No offence meant, its just that everyone has blood on their hands. Just best to avoid such comments.

SHADOW no offence taken as words can’t hurt anyone! but i do look ghost faced at the moment….hehe

Sarah, yes i know Shilpa is a huge star in India and i know she has enough money to feed a third world country, but she went in to the house for a reason, which she did tell other house mates she wanted to make it in the UK & USA

Also Jade is worth over £8 million and again she doesnt need the money but she also must have had a reason to go in to the house

Sarah It is your right to complain if you want but i would like to know if you or anyone else complained about the Racist comments Shilpa and Jermaine made?

As Jermaine and Shilpa had a conversation where they called Jackie ‘WHITE TRASH’ and another time Jermaine said, its them against us and Shilpa said yes but there are only 2 of us? and when Shilpa mimic’d the way the girls spoke!

Maybe its because us ‘White Trash’ don’t really take name calling to heart? I am calling myself white Trash as that is the way Mr Jackson would see me if he looked at me, but i am not 100% white, Just like Jade, Did anyone know Jade was also mixed race?

I hate the way the british public act like sheep following everything the press say, i wish people had learned when Princess Diana was killed and when 96 Football fans died to steer clear of the lies the press write but no people become brain washed by them everyday

I am so glad that there will be no public at tonights eviction as it would be like a barbaric hanging if Jade where to go!

For all the people who have complained about Jade Bullying i would like to ask what you would do if you where in a room with her tonight? I can imagine the Hate people have towards her would turn in to more than verbal abuse. Hate and Anger is a vile thing and makes people ugly! Why has no one complained that Jades LIFE is now at risk from vile people who can’t separate Real life from a TV show?

Also has it been showed that Both Jade and Shilpa are now acting like the best of Friends, and Jade has told Shilpa everything she had said about her? They have put it all behind them until one gets the boot tonight and then the Press will drag it all up again

I for one hope Jade stays tonight, so she can try and fix what damage has been done before all the vultures get at her

Oh and can someone please define Racism to me? and what words are we alowed to use? as i know when Shilpa was called the ‘Indian’ it was classed as racist, but i am going for a meal tomorrow night to my favorite resturant, i am having an Indian Meal, is that classed as Racist? Oh and I like my coffee Black, is that Racist, I just want to make sure we all know what being a Racist means as it looks like we have differnt views on this

i am sorry i am joining in so late but i just discovered your blog. i guess now that its all over its obvious that shilpa had a plan and was playing the victim card. we all needed to realise that she was a consenting adult on the show and knew what she was doing. if the racism bothered her, she should have walked off or whatever… she has the country in an uproar while she doesnt give a shit because she is busy making money out of it… amazing. I wrote a post on it long ago too….

and another one on racism we all face daily… do see them if you have the time.

nah, shilpa knows exactly what she’s doing.
What no one seems to have quite understood is that Shilpa is a very good actress. Everyone hates her because she wants them to. She also knows that if she infuriates people enough, their innate racism will spew forth.
Bollywood is no picnic; anyone who makes 51 Bollywood movies in 13 years has to be tough. Shilpa has a black belt in karate. She is just the girl to raise the pit bull in a dizzy little drip like Danielle and keep her frothing at the mouth long enough for her nascent career as a sweet little Wag to disappear down the drain.

But it’s a funny old world, to be sure. You can call her a “dog”. Sexism is fine. What you mustn’t do is call her a “Paki”. As if to be Pakistani was to be worse than being a dog. Our very tenderness on this issue is the flip side of racism, and still part of the same coin. If you call me an Aussie you don’t insult me because Aussieness is OK. Pakiness is evidently not OK.
