With lady luck shinning on me, I was able to watch Mani Ratnam‘s latest flick Guru on its first day of release itself inspite two major client presentations lined up back to back the very same day.
Surely by now many of you out there have either seen the film by now or atleast read its review published in many daily tabloids or well-known blogs. So inorder to cut the long chase short, I will get straight to the point – Is Guru worth your time and money?
In my opinion it is. And here are the three reasons behind my positive reference.
The Leading Pair: Seems like Papa Bachchan’s recent “pad yatra” to a famous Mumbai temple has worked as the magic wand on Bachchan Jr. and his lady love. Abhishek as Guru Kant Desai and Aishwarya Rai as his dehati wife have done an amazing job. It’s good to see actors who are not hesitant when it comes to experimenting with different characters and this what exactly these two have done. Inspite of being overshadowed by Hrithik Roshan in his previous film Dhoom 2, Abhishek has proven that he has much to offer besides the popular Bachchan surname and the super stud persona.
Ash on the other hand with her subtle and to the point performance, in a way has got over the jinx that only director i.e. Sanjay Leela Bhansali was able to display her acting capabilities. Their on-screen chemistry is completely flaw-less, especially in the scene where they lovingly chat about their dreams sitting on a swing or the scene of their union after a brief separation – will actually make you sit-up and notice their presence.
The extra ordinary Mithunda : Though his character in the film is no different from many others we have seen on the celluloid screen, you yet feel the difference. He is just as perfect as a man with very strong opinions but still so weak when it comes relationships in his life. Watching his power-house performance, you can’t help wonder why the heck hasn’t this man been offered such roles earlier? He could actually give the likes of Anupam Kher and Amitabh Bachchan a run for their money.
The under-lying thought – “Everything is fair in Bijjness”: The film is an attempt to justify corrupt means and methods used by a small-time business to climb his ladder to the top. According to the leading protagonist, his thinking and his ways of working were always legitimate since he not only benefited himself but in many ways also took the nation forward with him. He blames the System for his this attitude, a system which tends to favor the one who already have everything. Basically the hero of the film is also the bad guy – at times you will love him and at times you will hate him but you can’t ignore him.

One should not expect any less from Mithunda who has won 3 National Film Award for Best Actor as well as Best Supporting Actor!
I think that is true for “Big B” too!

I saw Guru twice in 3 days in NY. The theater was packed and the late comers could only find a few seats in the first row. This is a BIG one guys.
