It does not happen often, atleast not these days but thankfully I was rewarded for watching late night news.
Yesterday a world-famous rock band “Queen” was declared the Greatest British Band of All Time in a vote organised by BBC Radio. They managed to upstage legendary groups such as the Rolling Stones, Beatles and popular groups of our generation like the Oasis and Take That.
Each group was judged on song-writing, lyrics, live performances, originality and showmanship during a three-hour radio show in which people voted by email, text message and phone.
Desi-news channel, Headlines Today aired a short documentary film on the band which also gave a brief insight on the band’s leading member Freddie Mercury‘s Indian connection. Freddie was born in a Parsi family and his real name was Farrokh Bulsara. He spent major part of his childhood in India with his grandparents while his parents lived in the African Island named Zanzibar.
I don’t think there can ever band another rocking group like the Queen. Even today when I hear their creations like “We are the Champions”, “Somebody to Love”, the ever-popular “Bohemian Rhapsody”, “We will Rock You” and my personal favorite, “Another One Bites the Dust” – I get Goosebumps and can’t help but feel an internal high.
Thanks to them, we at least have some sane music to fall back on or else like would have been a living nightmare with the crap that gets thrown our way.
Here is one of their best Music Video – “I want to Break Free”.

Hmm,, I dont really find Queen great. They are too pop-ish. No amazing guitarwork or lyrics, no heaviness. They sure had variety and versatility, but somehow they never ventured into proper hard rock. Overall, the net result of theirs is pretty good, but not that great as “Greatest British Band of all Time”. Queen might be better than Oasis or Take That, but Beatles?
Whaatttt??? No Pink Floyd !! No Dire Straits !! They werent even part of the competition..
I just went through the link. It is “choose amongst five”.. and just measly 20,000 listeners voted. (We got more votes supporting Manu Sharma in TV SMS polls)

Shadows – Yaar, why is it that we never agree on most things?
With regards to Queen, maybe it’s popish factor that makes them more likeable in comparison with other rock bands. I mean not everyone is into headbanging, guitarish music. But I think their lyrics was always meaningful – be it simple or complex…they do manage to strike a chord.
As for Indian SMS polling system…the less said the better.

Sakshi,
Maybe I think differently than many other people.
Well, depends. But I do find it hard to believe that they polled more votes than Beatles. Pink Floyd and Dire Straits werent even in the final list. I mean, these guys have sold lot more albums than Queen. Strange result, is what I feel.
But then, the disagreements arent so acrimonious
are they?
