Oh! What a Night

The year 2006 is at its closure and as usual its party time for every Mumbaikar, deciding on party places is a big hassle cause of the ever increasing pubs, lounges and discos that Mumbai city has to offer.

Every other day there is a new pub or a lounge bar, launch party announced with all the Page 3 glitterati flocking in to see themselves put up on all the various newspaper columns. These new hangouts offer more varieties in decor, better facilities in design, modern look and but of course sky-rocketing prices for an entry.

Deciding to party on Christmas Eve in one of these new, delicious, trendy places isn’t quite a sensible option is what I learnt the other day. I was at this recently opened swanky place in Juhu, believing that I was at the right place at the right time but to my shock I was completely bored out of my wits.

I entered the place at around 10.30ish that evening; of course at the time it was completely empty (sadly some people still have the notion, the later you come the better you stand-out). The decor, food, drinks; everything besides the music was well looked after. The place seemed the happening sorts. My friends and I had a couple of drinks, indulged ourselves into some starters, struck up some good conversation but even at 12:30 am which is way past midnight, the place was empty!

The only occupied table on the top floor was the one occupied by us. Not that my friends were complaining much - it kind off felt like we were having a private party of our own. One of the guys even went up to the DJ with a paper napkin on which we have jotted down our requests. And looking at our sad state, the DJ was nice enough to oblige.

The scene at the bottom floor was no different - the other set tables were empty, the dance floor was barren, the waiters were standing idle. Surely they were cursing their bosses for the lack of bonus tips on such a big night.

However around 1.00 am my resistance finally gave up and I decided to walk out of this depressing night but what the heck, I was not going to leave without my invested money. And being a pushy blogger helps in many ways, especially in such matters. We collected our 50% refunded money from the manager and moved on to some other place which felt more alive than we were feeling at that point.

This time around we went to an old suburban club, (though some of us had our reservations and thought it wouldn’t be any different than the previous) of course we paid much less - for fuck sake we actually paid less than half the price we had at the earlier joint. And to say that this freaking place totally rocked would still be so un-cool.

Finally in the La La Land - Me and the Gang

The club was packed, the alcohol being offered was much better, the appetizers tasted good though I had no clue what I was eating and DJ was playing fantastic music and kept the tempo up mostly with all of song selections.

Its funny, isn’t it? In the sense, we actually do find immense joy and happiness in the most unlikely places. It’s just so hard to imagine that a club that I considered to be as shoddy as Shahrukh Khan’s stammering would make the night as good as having a dinner date with my favorite Salman Khan.

We called it a night in the wee hours of early morning and I am so glad to say that it was one of the best clubbing nights in a very long time for me.

Hopefully I will be able to say the same for the 31st night - ofcourse I am hinting to the latter part of my Christmas Eve outing.

Well, thats what happens when clubs and pubs start overcharging. Many of them do, and dont deliver. And invariably shut down or pass on the management.

Shadows - I agree with you totally. But there are (thankfully) a few poshy joints in the city which though a bit heavy on the pocket, do manage to deliver the right dose of party spirit.

Nik - No, It wasn’t Aurus. Given the fact that they did refund us some money…it wonn’t be right on my path to mention their name. :)

But the second place was “Rock Bottom” at Guestline Hotel. Yaar! Life ain’t that sad that I would be forced to go to J49. ;)
