“Rapaat” Song of the Year 2006

It’s that time of the year when most of us don’t need to look further for a reason to party. And if you are a typical Mumbaikar like yours truly then it’s like “Sone par suhaga” season.

Couple of day’s back I met up with a DJ friend, who works his magic at one of the popular lounge bars in Mumbai city. It’s no Einstein’s theory that December and January are the busiest months for club DJs, be it Wedding functions, Christmas parties, New Year Eve bashes - these guys are the most wanted people.

But my dear friend also informs me that with bucket loads of moolah comes in great responsibility. A music jockey needs to be on his feet at all times and by this I do not mean physically. They are expected to plug in all the latest chart busters, plus rail in audience requests and if things are not gelling well, be smart and quick enough to realize it and work accordingly.

And then there is always the risk of being “booed” by the (at times rowdy) dancing crowd.

When it comes to playing foot-tapping music, apna Bollywood rules the roost. According to the DJ friend, no matter how many Himeshes, Shankars and Pritams come and go…nothing can beat the old golden Bollywood days. Songs like, “1, 2 Cha Cha Cha” from the film Shalimar, “Jahan Teri Yeh Nazar” from the film Kaalia, then you have “Laila O Laila” from Qurbani and the eternal green “Mehbooba Mehbooba” from the block-buster film Sholay.

Undoubtly even in this category too Big B aka. Mr. Amitabh Bachchan is the King when it comes to having the maximum number of high-pumping dance songs under his belly.

Anyways cutting the long story short, this week’s poll is based on picking the “Rapaat” as in popular song of the year 2006 - when it comes to going mad with your feet, arms and buttocks on the dance floor. And yes, this poll is limited to Bollywood only.

Please note that the poll options are based on the input given by the DJ friend. As per him, all of these fall under the “often requested” category.

Result: Dehati “Bedi” song from the popular hit film Omkara wins hands down with 23.3% votes. Initially leading in the race, “Paatshala” and “Chand Sifarish” have landed with 13.3% and 10% votes respectively. Suprisingly no-one voted for the song “Signal” considering that it’s pretty popular at all nightclubs.

Hey, DJ sucks - is second after Beedi in the results as of now. What about a similar poll for rock? (ie pubs, not discs).

Personally speaking, I think the list is pretty much accurate in terms of current racy songs. Though my fav pick would be “Chuk De Phate” from Khosla Ka Ghosla….I totally love the number.

“Beedi” is good too but to ‘ghatti’ ishytyle for me.
