Ram Jethmalani’s first attempt to distract the court, gain media attention and delay justice, all in the name of “fair trial” – fell flat on his face when the court dismissed his petition of seeking transfer of the Jessica Lall case from Justice R S Sodhi’s court.
But to take this highly-acclaimed criminal lawyer not seriously would be like chopping off the branch you are sitting on. So sprinting through his collection of ‘Best Defense Tactics’, collected by him over the years, Mr. Jethmalani presents the court (and us) with his yet another ridiculous theory in the process of saving his client Manu Sharma.
Lawyer Ram Jethmalani yesterday told the Delhi High Court that he would reveal the identity of the real killer of model Jessica Lall at the hearing today.
Jethmalani, who added a new twist to the case, as he argued before Justices R S Sodhi and P K Bhasin on behalf of prime accused in the case Manu Sharma, claimed a Sikh man wearing a red turban had shot Jessica. He said Sharma was framed by the police, who were desperate to hide the real killer, because of his vast influence.
Not surprisingly he too blames the Delhi Police of mishandling the case and accusing his client with planted evidence.
The police recorded the statement of prosecution witness Deepak Bhojwani even though he had come to the restaurant after Jessica was shot, said the lawyer. Jethmalani contended that the police had planted Bhojwani to give a statement against Sharma.
The lawyer claimed that till May 6, 1999, investigators were not able to make up their minds about the real culprit.
During all that time, the police were looking for someone who was present at the crime scene and would be willing to give a statement against Sharma.
Finally, the cops made Bhojwani the first prosecution witness and recorded his statement after putting words in his mouth, said Jethmalani. Bhojwani was told to say that he had an interaction with the prime accused, who introduced himself as Manu Sharma, argued Jethmalani.
For all those wondering the impact of Ram Jethmalani’s involvement on the Jessica Lall case, hopefully have had their question answered. The experienced lawyer has (successfully) managed to throw the case off tangent with his ‘goose chase’ or more appropriately ‘turban chase’ theory.
Only God Jethmalani has the knowledge as to what direction will the case be turned to with the inception of his conspiracy tactic. Though many inconsistencies and dark spots can be pinned out in the defense lawyer’s arguments but by the time the prosecution lawyers and the police do so, it will only help Manu Sharma and his team in buying out more time and thereby dimming the media and public glare off the case.
In the film Damini, Govind yells out the words “Taareekh par taareekh, taareekh par taareekh, taareekh par taareekh deti hai yeh adaalat, par insaaf nahin deti” - well one could expect the same in the Jessica Lall’s case.
And to Mr. Ram Jethmalani, all I can say is “A job well-done”.
