Dejected Socceroos Players |
Last night I watched the football match between Australia and Italy – Boy! Did it give me the jiggters till the very end.
Australia gave everything they learnt from their past few games but the only thing they lacked was sheer luck. Inspite of possessing the ball nearly 49% of the game they were not able to capitalize on it by scoring a goal. They had several chances to seal the game and seemed at least to have pushed it into extra time until they were deprived by the Spanish referee Victor Carrasco; a controversial decision.
It took a disbelieving penalty in the 94th minute – when Australia’s Lucas Neill was adjudged to have taken down Italy’s Fabio Grosso – right in front of the goal mouth.
With seconds remaining in the game, Francesco Totti coolly slotted home the penalty and then paraded the ground with his thumb in his mouth, as the Australian players protested to the referee and rubbed their hands in disbelief.
Clearly one of the cruelest way to make an exit but as they say everything is fair in love and war…..and in World Cup Football.

And portugal is through.. you should have seen that game. Four red cards. Watch out for them, they are the dark horse. They are having a very good run since Euro 2004. I am saying this on the basis of current form, since that is what matters the most in world cup. SriLanka won the cricket world cup because they were in wonderful form that time.
And I must say that Italy has a strong defense (even though Maldini isnt around, and they have nobody of the class of Roberto Baggio up front), its not easy to score against them. Aussies hardly had a chance, IMHO. Of course, I thought they would go to the last 16 or 8, but not any further.
Now you know how difficult it is to score against a fast and well organized European team. If eleven men are determined to stop you, they will. Latin Americans have not won the world cup every time they have played.

Yea, I have to admit that they played well against Italy, although the Italians weren’t much good themselves. Still, one cannot deny that Aussies put in some hard work there.
But I also stick to my original comment..:D, Sakx.

Shadows & Harsh – Well Australia’s defeat really pissed me off but what can one do. It all seems to un-fair..right now. But we have to move on. So my bet now would be on Germany. Lets see how things turn out for them.

Hmm yeah.. Germany have the home advantage. Plus no stars but they are clinical and like a well oiled machine. Right man at the right place at the right time – like that management funda. They are without doubt one of the best teams around this world cup.
But can they overcome Argentina ?? My last four for the semis were Arg, Brazil, Engl and Por. But now england and portugal face off so three of my favs will be there. Of course assuming that arg def ger and brazil def gha.
