Sholay Vs Don - The Ultimate Bollywood Battle of Remakes
Our hat-ke director Ram Gopal Verma never fails to make his perspectives known, whether they are Bollywood related or anything else for that matter. The striking aspect about this man is the fact that he isn’t in the industry to gratify people. He makes his own set of rules and won’t bend them for anyone.
Off-late RGV is being getting lot of flak from the Film Industry, the reason being his decision to do a re-make of yester-years mega blockbuster Sholay. From the Sippys to the Akthars, all have being doing their bit to put a dead-lock on Verma’s intentions. But they should know better, RGV isn’t the sorts to back-out especially now that this move has already given him so much publicity, even before the movie in question has actually gone on floors.
In his recent interview with Mid-Day, this is what he said….
Sholay will happen this August, regardless of who’s in or who’s out of the cast. And I’ll finish the film in November. That’s my final word on the subject. People can say and feel what they like. Ajay Devgan is very much on, for Veeru’s role. I’ve heard rumours that he’s out of the film. But he isn’t.I can’t stop working and keep refuting the rumours. I’ve got Mohit Ahlawat and Ajay as Jai and Veeru. But let me state once and for all, with the exception of Mr Bachchan as Gabbar Singh, no member in the cast is indispensable. It’s a Gabbar-centric film. Every one is also important, but not pivotal.
And obviously he had some words for his well-wishers (not)…
No matter what people say, making Sholay isn’t self-indulgence for me. I want to make it from the bottom of my heart. I believe Javed Akhtar saab said Sholay has already been done to perfection and cannot be remade.Well if it has been done to perfection then maybe I’ll make it imperfect. Javed saab also commented that Don can be remade because there’s room for improvement. Well?. let both of us (Farhan Akhtar and Ramu) come out with our remakes and see if Javed saab is right.
In silent words, RGV has challenged Farhan Akhtar’s directorial skills. In my opinion, it was really petty of Mr. Javed Akhtar to ridicule RGV. Being partial towards one’s own children is one thing but to back them with such stupid excuses is completely ludicrous.
Don’t know why but my 20+ years of experience with Hindi cinema, gives a strong feeling that RGV will turn out to be the winner in this battle.
Another person who will be laughing his head to the bank would be none other but Mr. Amitabh Bachchan. The reason; he is playing the main-lead in both the re-makes.

We all have a right to express our views. In many instances; it will be against ours and in some; with us. To hear them out is 'decency' but to let them get to you is 'weakness'.

Sholay was perfect because it was “inspired” by excellent Western movies.
And yeah, RGV is a better director than Farhan Akhthar, any day.

Hey,
It was quite interesting to read about Ram Gopal Varma’s plans to remake Sholay. Personally, I think he’ll make a good film and would add his own “touch” to the film. He’s not the type to blindly remake the film and as I read in one of the articles, his remake will suit contemporary tastes. Personally, my opinio is that a movie doesn’t get more perfect (if there is such a term) than Sholay. However, it’s unfair to compare Ram Gopal Varma’s Sholay with Farhan Akhtar’s Don. Both are re-makes. Both are intelligent directors. And both will add their personal bit to the movies that they are making.
I am looking forward to watch both Ram Gopal Varma’s Sholay as well as Farhan Akhtar’s Don.
However, I am not sure if Amitabh Bachchan figures in the remake of Don. Are you sure?

rgv better director than farhan akhtar anyday?
its most non-sensible and meaningless remark so far.
every film rgv makes is a copy, he hasnt made anything original, he takes help of sex sells and babe factor ( i dont say erotic art is not art, but over use of it ina commerical form renders it cheap and shows rgv can hardly amke a movie not showing naked women or violence) where as farhan remade only one film he has been inspired by since childhood, and made it WELL, VERY WELL, besides being a director he has many many many talents and he is himself an awesome man, and a decent AND DIGNIFIED one…no cheapness, no nudity, ONLY ART AND TALENT, WIT AND HIS CHARISMA. and ALL NOW SAW WHAT RGV’S AAG TURNED OUT TO BE , A PATHETIC FLOP AND SILLY JOKE, ITS CALLED RGV KE DAAG .
FARHAN AKHTAR IS WAY BETTER THAN THIS FLOP insane PORN MOVIE MAKER ANY DAY.
