They are Doing It for the Country

I love Australia and I love Ozzietralians. But from today I shall respect and admire them even more.

The reason : Their patriotism towards their country cannot be matched.

Check this out, SMH reports :

Australian women appear to have succumbed to Treasurer Peter Costello’s charms, taking up his challenge to have more babies for the good of the nation.

Last year, they gave birth to 261,400 little Australians, a 2.4 per cent increase on the previous year.

According to the Australian Bureau of Statistics, that was the highest number of births in Australia since 1992.

And why you may wonder?

The rising birth rate seems to coincide with Mr Peter Costello’s plea during the 2004 budget for women to procreate in a bid to counter the effects of an ageing population.

That year, he famously urged Australian families to copiously copulate and have “one (baby) for your husband and one for your wife and one for the country”.

Now if only we Indians could show similar intensity of patriotism by following a simple slogan, “Hum do hamare do”.
