[...] Some were showing Aamir’s interview, clarifying his stance on the Sardar Sarovar Dam subject and on the other hand we had Actor-cum-Politician Shatrughan Singha neither supporting nor disapproving his party member’s demand that Aamir should apologies for his recent statements on the issue. To say that BJP is blowing this whole matter out of proportion and trying to enforce their power on an individual wouldn’t be anything new. In the past there have been several other political parties, religious groups, etc who have restored to un-civilized and at times extremely brutal tactics, just to get their point across and suppress the ones who question their motives. Today’s Times Of India headline, shouted something like, “Aamir dares the BJP“, which in my opinion is utter bull-shit. Anyone who saw the Aamir’s televised interview would agree that he in no way challenged or insulted the concerned political party. Instead he acknowledged that BJP has several respectable and intelligent leaders, who understand and believe that ‘everyone has a right to his/her own opinion’. He also urged the people of Gujarat to support him on the rehabilitation issue and help the needy. It’s sad to see that (some) leading newspapers instead of providing factual information - try and add more fuel to the fire with mis-leading headlines; just to increase their circulation. The most important question that we need to answer is, “Does Democracy truly exists in India?” A country where women are subjected to religious outburst for their choice of clothes, where women have to think twice before expressing their views on sexuality, where students are subjected to Police thrashing because of using their right to protest, where religious groups are threatened by screening of an ordinary movie, where witnesses turn hostile cause speaking the truth is seen more harmful - No! Democracy doesn’t exist here, its only meant to be in our text books, its only an illusion of our imagination. Aamir, I am with you. Our views may clash but like you, I still do believe that each one of us has the right to voice our opinion and we shall not let any damn person take that away from us. Jab saaz hai, aawaaz hai, phir kis liye hichkichaana [...]

>>Shayam was the ONLY ONE who saw it happening.

How naive? Hundred people minimum. There is a heated argument. Nobody notices that. Then manu shoots her. Somebody even commented before he shot - "Nakli gun hai".

How are you so SURE that shayan was the ONLY ONE.

>> If everyone starts to think like Mr. Munshi & You, than others can never expect anything good coming out of the society.

Now, do you know if I did anything like that? If yes, tell me what. And if no, why the comment?

Yes, the police is not to blame for not protecting witnesses. Yep, everyone in the society is a sava sher and like Mithun, he/she can bump off a dozen goondas in 5 minutes flat. Get real, gal.

Now, get that image of - everyone thinking "apna kya jaa raha hai" - out of your mind. Not everyone thinks like that. People still have that do-good spirit. But if the ones supposed to protect you from guns, using guns, turn against you, where do you turn to. Dont you think the police might have harassed shayans family.

Just that the MEDIA is dissing shayan so much, I thought its much more fishy than what it appears to be.

Ok, agreed. He is guilty. But entirely?? I think the media just shouts without making any heads or tails of the matter.

>>
Shayam was the ONLY ONE who saw it happening. It was HE who informed the cops and then indentified Manu Sharma as the ‘killer’.

Ok. HE DID THAT. Right?

>>Firstly I don’t care about the other witnesses

My point is that he did have it in him to testify amongst a hundred others. Why did he turn around is for the police to investigate. Dont you watch NDTV. They had this program on Jessica running for three days. Ramani did admit that they were threatened. Dont you think the only reason for shayans turnaround would have been... guess guess. There are lot of things we dont know.

Perjury. Trying Shayan Munshi for perjury - or indicting him - is one solution. But indicting or convicting someone for perjury alone is not going to be enough. Not in India, at least. Even Zahira Sheikh got only a year. What's that going to do?

I'm not aware if the Indian legal system allows for punitive action or damages, but IMHO, should be there. OK, you're not tried for murder, but you can be put away till hell freezes over. Or fined for an obscene amount so you're left dubbing - in Hindi! - for the rest of your life.

As for the cops, witness protection and jury trials - I don't see that system coming in for the next few generations. Witnesses will continue to be intimidated and criminals will continue to get away scot-free.

As an afterthought, punitive actions may drive away all witnesses completely. The lust for lucre has completely corrupted the Indian psyche.

Shadow - Firstly I don't care about the other witnesses, Shayam was the ONLY ONE who saw it happening. It was HE who informed the cops and then indentified Manu Sharma as the 'killer'. But in the court he states that he was mis-guided by the Delhi Police and was not aware of the contents of the FIR. His this very denial changed the very course of the case. And you want me to be sympathetic towards him ! If everyone starts to think like Mr. Munshi & You, than others can never expect anything good coming out of the society.

As for Ramani, have you even read the news? She and her family have also been detained by the Delhi Police.

What makes you think, Sakshi, that Shayan has attitude and hostility. Ok, hostile witness, he is guilty on that count, but what about the hundred others who witnessed the murder. Are you not aware of that.

I have nothing to do with Shayan, but my dad has faced the dreaded Indian legal system. Come on, Shayan is no rich actor or Salman Khan, that things will be easy for him. Its easy to trash Shayan on your space, but IMHO, he atleast had the guts to face the court amongst those hundred. Where did Bina Ramani go? Why did not she testify?

My take on it - http://imaginaryshadows.blogspot.com

Shivmani2 - Well it could either out of fear or money. If its out fear, then again he has a chance to come in front of the cops. This time around he will have the support of an entire nation.

Shashikant - Excatly my point.

Wonder what kind of pressure turned him to a hostile witness?

Should he be punished, rather than the real killers? (i bet they out there partying somewhere)

Points to ponder about don't you think?
