Pop Rocks; the fizzy candy |
1956 - William A. Mitchell’s dream of creating instant soda from a tablet lead to the invention of Pop Rocks candy.
20 years later, this carbonated candy, more widely known as popping candy, became one of the most popular candies ever with its US retail introduction as Pop Rocks in 1976. A retail phenomena for 30 years, today Pop Rocks continues to be a national brand full of energy, popping with sales potential and has since become a classic among top quality international confectionery items.
What makes these candy rocks pop on your tongue?
Popping candy consists of small pieces of hard candy that have been gasified with carbon dioxide, the same gas used in fizzing soft drinks. In the mouth, these small pieces release the entrapped gas to give off a lasting sensation of action as well as unique cracking sounds.
As concerns were raised over potential injuries from these small explosions, health officials said the candy was safe, but urban legends about Pop Rocks fatalities still ran wild. Today, the makers of Pop Rocks hope the brand can live on as a nostalgia product.
I remember begging my brother to buy me Pop Rocks. It use to cost around Rs.50.00 some years ago, which was way up my pocket money. My favourite flavours were Strawberry and Cola. Ahhhh…miss those days !
