Death of a hero

On 28th Feb 2006, Meher Bhargava a lawyer by profession was shot at blank point in Lucknow. The culprits; four young men with strong connections. The reason; eve-teasing.

Meher was coming out of a building when these men passed lewd remarks at her daughter-in-law. When Meher, confronted them, demanding an apology, one of them shot her in the neck. The incident took place barely 100 metres from the Lucknow police superintendent’s office. The accused were staying in an apartment belonging to K.D. Singh, a block pramukh of the Samajwadi Party.

She was rushed to the Sanjay Gandhi Post-graduate Institute in Lucknow and later shifted to Apollo Hospital in Delhi. Sadly, after a month’s battle; Meher passed away on 25th March.

Jaiprakash and Pramod Singh, two of the accused, have been arrested while the other two Amit and Sachin Pahari ( main accused ) are absconding.

Bhargava’s family and friends have announced a protest in Lucknow on Monday.

There’s been growing public outrage over Meher Bhargava’s murder and this has forced Chief Minister Mulayam Singh Yadav to promise action.

Hopefully this time round, justice won’t be denied nor will it take centuries to come.
