Street Harassment

An unnecessary, unwanted, ruthless STREET gesture towards men, women and children….but WOMEN are its most familiar victims.

A nudge on the shoulder, a feel of the waist, a touch on the thighs, an intentional crude bodily contact are some of the very few characteristics, of street harassment faced by today’s women. A scare…a constant fear of being physically abused by alien hands, surrounds her day-in and day-out.

Women of all shapes, sizes and social standings experience this on a daily basis. Whether it is traveling by public transport or walking through a busy street or even taking an evening stroll. Often this kind of abuse is followed by a fake apology just so that it’s not made into a big deal, but at most times the offender walks off behaving as if nothing has happened. This kind of behavior not only affects the women but also the men-folk who’s loved one experiences it.

Harassment towards children by big road bullies is also rampant. Grown up adolescents keep looking for ways to tease small children, just to quench their growing egos.

Street harassment of any kind is a monstrous crime that needs to be faced with an iron hand. It needs women to toughen up and retaliate when faced with this kind of rude atrocity.

The Blank Noise Project team, to commemorate its first anniversary in Blogosphere, is making an effort towards bringing this crime into the open. Thereby making today’s woman aware of her underlying strengths, in order to fight street harassment till its very end!

I urge one and all to encourage this effort by participating in the Blog-a-thon 2006 organized by this project. All you need to do is write your thoughts on street harassment/ eve teasing or simply a small writeup on The Blank Noise Project.

We need tio raise our voice against this harassment there and then. girls shouldn’t feel ashamded- ur being teased - its not ur fault. raise ur voice and create a scene

I’ve found my own way to fight this street harassment shit, if a guy dares to touch me, i try to catch him and beat him up there and then. ;-) and if i can’t catch him , i leave him with a string of abuses in every possible language he’ll understand.

episode 1: slapped a guy hard on the station so everyone turned and saw him going red
episode 2: elbowed a thousand guys who try to touch thinking we won’t raise our voice
epiosde 3: got a couple of guys beaten up at the movie theatre by the watchmen. this was lots of fun though was a little scared later as to what would happen once we step out.
and so on

so all the girls out there pls take heart and beleive me guys are so scared shit, they scout like mice as soon as u raise ur voice and create a scene

I feel that Street Harassment is a growing problem in Iowa, particularly in our High School and
College Towns because I feel too freaked out about the fact that not enough of our feminists
are seeing red!

The funny thing about street harassment is it’s one of the most ubiquitious of crimes but it’s all hush-hush. And that’s what perpuates it. Nobody wants to talk about it. Even the law does not give it the kind of importance that it should! And the abusers have a field day! The perverts can’t stand the light of day, so why not let them have it!

Completely agree with all the comments here.., the problem is more deeprooted than it actually potrays to be.

With the Indian kind of Socio-cultural upbringing, the ideal scenario would be to give the woman respect.., and etc etc.. but that hardly happens most of the times- it takes demented, perverted mindsets to take pleasure out of such sadistic indulgences. The masses are still steeped in their feudal mindframes…, the resistance to change is quagmired deep into them, anyone speaking of a change is viewed with sceptisism, its a kind of comfort zone that one has established…., the confidence being ki.., the person in question wouldnt raise voice, because theres more to lose if done so. Its upto the moral conscience of those perosns to ponder over thier actions…and control systems like religious dogmas etc..have little bearing on them.
