I agree with Sakshi on this one, even if I am agreeing in a knee-jerk kind of way. My ex-girlfriend at college was from Mumbai and she used to go out with a Lebanese, and she went as far as to join the Lebanese SA at the college, but as soon as she went and met her boyfriend’s family she knew it was over because they treated her like a third class servant (most likely because indians/south asians do most of the menial jobs in the middle east).
And again, I’m not really generalizing here, and I’ll admit I’m not a full expert, but I do have to say that a lot of my indian/pakistani friends have lived in the middle east or were born there and the stories are no different. I’ve known many people who have been unsuccessful and I must say it’s just their fault. They dont try enough or they don’t do it the right way - the right way to present yourself for example. Anyways I’m an Indian been here for 5 years and things have been good. Uni life was amazing with people much more accepting to all cultures. Work life has thrown me into the sea. There are all kinds of people you meet - some more accepting than others. Some put you down due to them thinking they’re superior due to many reasons, mainly this being their “home” and English being their native language. Aussies are aggressive people so they are not very forgiving if something pisses them off. They don’t compromise much but still are very open to all cultures. They grow up eating butter chicken at home too now. No country is 100%. Racism is everywhere. There are good people, there are bad people. Simple as that.

1. Learn how to punctuate and spell properly. Lynn Truss’s: Eats Shoots & Leaves, is a great book; it’s simple and easy, reading.
2. Post concisely, even if you are pissed-off. It’s a lot more effective that way.
3. Don’t crib about how you are treated in the West. Asians aren’t the dominant race in town and even if we were, making the same mistakes that the West is making, is hardly the solution!

1) Australian are Happy go lucky people.
2) They like to give everyone a faire go
3) When it comes to sports no matter if you are black/white/Indian/Chinese if you are good at sports you are looked upon with “GREAT” respect admired and spoiled.
4) They don’t like wingers, people who cheat take short cuts and up themselves….…again this can be anyone Australian whites, black/white/Indian/Chinese
5) As a society they have similar views to Europeans and Americans…i.e you have to be the smartest, sexiest, strongest, brightest for you to be accepted.

The problem all immigrants, all groups face is similar to what the African American faced when they were enslaved by the White Americans. They were subjected to more cruelty than we can ever imagine just because they look different. But what has happened now, they have changed the whole thing around…..now RAP R&B music is more popular than main stream than Country music.,…the Black American are considered sexy, smart and all the girls want ….them a LOT WHY????

Australian economy generates fewer jobs compared to UK and Germany and is nothing in comparison to US economy, even India is the world 4th largest economy with PPP running in trillions of US dollars but population of more than 1 billion makes much more people competing for limited resources which force the educated and skilled people to look overseas market for jobs. But my friends what always glitters is not gold, the White Australia policy has guaranteed that no people of colour participate in the decision making process governing Australia and therefore Australia has much remained an Anglo dominated country with little rights for coloured, indeginous and migrant populations in practice. There may be rules for equal opportunity in employment but they are not followed, there are rules for anti-discrimination but they are bypassed to promote white folks and their families.

benifits and plum employment opportunities and coloured guys have to live on left over and scraps who is nobody willing to take. So stop expecting much from Australia and try to do well in India as India will guarantee you high paying jobs in the years to come with spectacular growth of more than 10% GDP per annum. Also there is no better altenative than to live along with your friends and families with no discrimination, in Australia most of the Australians have hostile and in-different attitude towards immigrants and they see them as threat and invasion to their culture and social security. After spending a long time in America, how are you finding Australia as a place to work and as a society to live in?

There is a misconception about Australians in USA that Australians are not very hard working people. I have not been able to find a proof of it as yet although I must say that there is much hierarchy in the work culture compared to USA. People are not comfortable approaching the CEO. There is a cultural gap between the juniors and seniors.

Australia has not yet assimilated the minorities represented in the community into the workforce. There are very few minorities in the executive positions. Australian male has not yet crossed the threshold in accepting women as equals and the talent of women has not been tapped to its utmost. There is also lack of encouragement to students in getting technical qualification. Recently Caltex had to look for technical expertise outside of Australia for some of our projects.

Q: Have you met many Indian Australians so far?
I have been to a few Indian functions but find the Indian Australians a very isolated society, mostly clinging to their own communities. I did not find many non-Indians at those functions, specially, Australians.

I do not believe in socializing merely with your ‘own people’. Unless we educate others about our culture we will not be able to gain respect from them. Hate crimes occur because of ignorance. As human beings, absence of information can mean the void is filled with negative thoughts. I believe in over communicating than under communicating

You know people, growing up in Australia, i’ve seen it all. Racism comes from EVERY sector, but it’s not so much amongst the white people, white racists are a minority here.
We have some of the largest populations of ‘minority’ groups in the world here. And because they close themselves off, and segregate themselves they feel as though they are being discriminated against, and they attack everyone in a offensive way due to a kind of paranoia. They still carry old world values, that mostly don’t even exist in their mother countries anymore, they only mix and marry with people of there own culture, etc, etc.
I’ve had endless conversations with Indians, asians, lebanese, greeks etc, etc. And they all tend to agree that the stigma of racism is something that they conjured up themselves, or perpetrated on other people themselves.

BTW Australians are not descendant from convicts. Infact very few convicts actually nominated to stay here when their time was up. (I belive the official figure was around 150 convicts who chose to remain). The rest was made up of free settlers, up until the gold rush in the 1800’s. The largest immigrating nationalities were English, Irish, Scottish and Chinese, with other nationalities arriving in the early 1900’s to the present day.

I am of Turkish origin and lived there for several years, mind you I look European and I didn’t experience any discrimination in my social life(and they are so damn shallow in Sydney with empty brains) but didn’t I hear that white trash saying shit like bloody Asians this bloody Abbos that all the time! They had White-Australia policy up until recent times. I moved to London two months ago to be close to Europe and Turkey. London is a much harder place to live but with plenty more opportunities for people from any race and I heard from several British people that lived or travelled in Australia that Aussies are sooo racist! Every single English person actually told me the same thing over and over. “How did you actually manage to get a job there?” They ask me.. I go ” It took me bloody 6 years to score an OK job with uni degrees and several European languages and work experience” , the sort of job you would not even shit on back in Istanbul but walk into those offices in the Sydney, Melbourne, Brisbane CBDs you will see those brainless white people sitting on their asses doing nothing all day, and they don’t even have university qualifications, walk into hotels you will meet those migrants from China,India and Thailand cleaning toilets and rooms and most have Accounting/IT degrees and some of them speak English better than your average Sheila and Dazza. It used to drive me fucking crazy! Glad I am out of it! Yes it is a damn easy country to live in even if you don’t work ,but do I ever miss the beach and the sunshine? NO! Never as hard as it may be in London. Because I don’t like the people in Australia. I can breathe the culture now, I can go to museums ,visit European cities on the weekends. And you know one thing they are good for? A great passport to have! I don’t need visas whever I go in the world, as “we” are known to be a wealthy and friendly (friendly my ass!) country. This forum has been quite an eye-opener. I’ve met a few Aussies before and indeed, found them incredibly racist. Even though they appeared nice with me (and polite), I could sense that they didn’t like my presence in their company. And I’m not your stereotypical rustic from a village in India -I’m clean with nice hair-cut and take shower daily and spend a lot of money on body care products. Also, my manners and communication style is not the least bit rude, unfriendly and I never ask personal questions. I just get along fine with EVERY other ethnicity/nationality on Earth.

After meeting these Australians, I felt something like maybe all whites are like that. It’s only when I interacted with Europeans and Americans I understood that they can be amazing people. It changed my mind and I came to realize that the fault lies with “Australian culture somewhere”.

My friends suggested me to complete my graduation in Australia but I’m not keen at all. I don’t want to be in a country which treats me like a second-class citizen on the basis of my skin colour. I won’t even ever consider travelling to Australia (on a transit flight).

Australia is not racist. I’m a white Australian, although i like to call myself an Australian, colour has nothing to do with being Australian. I have seen some racism, been called racist things. I see a lot of anti-Australian racism in the comments on this page. As an African American, I also see a lot of anti-American racism perpetrated by immigrants to the US. When foreign students can’t find their niche in America, they blame racism. I am not denying that systematic racism exists world round, but if you can’t conquer it, you’re just playing into the role of victim.

Anglo-Saxons are immigrants or descendants of immigrants themselves. Australia is a really wonderful country but if you’re an Indian/Pakistani/Persian/Arab male, you may not like it much because Aussie White girls, in my experience are pretty much discriminaing against particularly, these ethnicities -except of course immigrant White girls from countries outside the Anglosphere who can be different because they don’t think much in English and are more pleasant to deal with. I did have a great time in Australia as working professional but whenever I tried to hit a girl in a nightclub/beach, she would tell me off with something like (now I believe they’re kinda funny):

“Go find someone of your colour”
“Look you fuken terrorist just go and blow yourself up leave me alone”

Not that those girls were racist because we’d often see them wrapped around Abo’ men…they would rather date Black/Africans than Indians.

This initial resentment may be due to the fact that these girls perceive all Indian/Pakistani/Persian/Arab males as chauvinist pigs….because of our culture…also our communication style seems to piss them off.

The only success I had in Australia was with prostitutes and slutty women. None of the decent girls gave me time of the day. I was really disheartened. I’ll never return to that country ever, not even for holidays.

I am 1/2 Scottish/ 1/2 Creole I have been living in NYC my entire life and have never traveled further east than Austria. I can tell you this I have never been to Australia but I have heard some abhorrently racist shit from the few Aussies I have encountered at the occasional party. One of them started a rant about aboriginal people. I am highly educated. I politely admonished her verbally for a few. As the night wore on she took a liking to my wily mulatto ways; came home with me…gave me head and then I fucked her up the ass. The only overseas racist incident was in Graz Austria. Some drunken fool started some shit but the crew I was with shut him down. That seemed to be a rather racists country as well as they had billboards telling the populace not to feed the Bosnian refugees as the war was in full swing at the time. ‘Eliminate Racism’…..your name would indicate noble ambition but by the sounds of your posts perhaps a better one would be “Lets Get Even With White Folks No Matter What The Cost’”. A little wanky but that in itself would no doubt make it even more relevant hey?

Firstly there is not one type of white (adjective NOT noun) Australian anymore than there is one kind of human. There are various social levels here and within those stratas you have educated pleasant people, educated unpleasant people, uneducated pleasant people and so on. And then there are those who are just plain hard to read…just like all ‘races’. To those of you from abroad who have had a hard time here and want to blame ‘The Man’, I say grow up. This is the real world. No matter who or what you are, you will encounter people who don’t accept you, could be because your not white, could be because you’re not Christian, could be the opposite, could be that your fat and ugly. On the other hand, maybe they just noticed the giant chip on your shoulder and thought “if we hire this guy, he’s probably gonna spend half his day on internet forums complaining about his inability to get laid.” Hey, I’m just saying its possible…maybe even probable with some of you whiny b!tches.

Now I’m an Australian in every sense of the word. I put this country first and above all others, not because I think its better but its the place that spawned me, and until this world does away with borders I place my allegiance here. My ancestry is a combination of (in order of percentage not priority) Irish, Scottish, Aboriginal, Italian and Afghani. In all fairness this mixing all took place more than 80 years ago so I haven’t a lot to say about the ‘migrant experience’, but I’m assuming this forum is about racism not ‘originism’.

Now to any white Australian who tells a non white Australian whether they were born here or not to ‘go home’ , I can only say ‘get over yourself you insecure fuck, you’re embarrassing the nation and yourself’. That said, to any new arrival here who refuses to acknowledge the work that white Australians have put into this nation over the last 200 years by saying ‘you’re just convict migrant scum’ I would remind you that the continent of Australia had been noticed by SE Asians through contact and the rest of Asia though trade long before the whites ever turned up. The difference is that no other nation wanted the job of civilizing this giant desert island full of spiders, snakes and black dudes with spears, so it was left alone.

It wasn’t until the British (through the blood of many Aborigines, pioneers and convicts) carved this place into an attractive nation that it became the migrant destination that it is today. Don’t confuse the term pioneer with that of the generic migrant.

Everyone should feel welcome here, but there is respect needed on both sides of the fence. Migrants are humans too who are driven by the same basic emotions and priorities of those already here, and should be treated likewise. However, no matter how much some of you new arrivals ridicule the ‘lack of culture’ in Australia…..it was you who moved here not the other way around, and some acceptance and willful adaptation to the ways already established here by generations of different sorts of people is required. Enough of this sulky teenager attitude. Get over it, or do what real men and women do when they are unhappy with a system….revolt! Organise a resistance, get weapons from the Cubans, throw a coup!! Sound like too march hard work? A little too dangerous….or perhaps its just counter productive considering the reasons you moved to a safe country like Australia in the first place. Hhmmm, perhaps theres something in that hey?
