Mangal Pandey - Aasli ya Nakli !!!

Next Friday we shall see the release of Aamir Khan’s much awaited movie MANGAL PANDEY - THE RISING based on brave martyr Mangal Pandey whose death is to be believed to have triggered off what is known as the ‘First Indian war of Independence’ in 1857.This will be Aamir Khan’s first movie after a gap of 4 years, since his Oscar dreams for ‘Laagan’ did not materialize.

Story Highlights as stated on the movie website :
Mangal Pandey - The Rising is an epic tale of friendship, love, loss and betrayal set against the backdrop of the Indian Mutiny of 1857. This sweeping epic is based on real historical events, seen as a trigger for Indian independence.

However there are many who believe otherwise. In a recently published book called
‘Mangal Pandey: Brave Martyr or Accidental Hero?’ author Rudranghsu Mukherjee writes “Nationalism creates its own myths — Mangal Pandey is part of that imagination of historians. He had no notion of patriotism or even of India. For him, mulk was a small village, Awadh. If love for his country drove him, he would not have become a sepoy in the first place. Mangal Pandey was not a shahid.”

According to him Mangal Pandey was in a state of intoxication and committed a foolhardy act for which he was hanged. Also many Western versions of the incident have accused the sipahis involved in the 1857 rebellion of loot, plunder, and even rape. From this perspective, Mangal Pandey would be part of the xenophobic, barbaric tribe that killed every Christian and European in sight.

I guess the actual TRUTH will continue to remain History’s Mystery. As for me, i will definitely go and watch the movie and post my views on it.

An article published in Mumbai Mirror on
Mangal Pandey gives a brief information about the man and also talks a little about the movie.
